Big House BBQ Updates

I'll post a full list of visitors a day or so before the actual event, but he's a couple of updates from two talented prospects hoping to be there.

- Ohio DE Chris Wormley has said this week that he'll be there, and that means we should all be on commit watch that weekend. I've said in the past that late July would be his rough decision date, so that fits in pretty well. Michigan has lead OSU for a long time now, I can't see any reason why he wouldn't want to commit on that day.

- The next update is from another top Ohio prospect, Brionte Dunn. When I did the live chat a week ago, I mentioned that Dunn would be looking to come up for the BBQ, and this week it seems a lot more likely that he will.

With Kalis switching over, I'm more confident about UM's chances of luring Dunn to Ann Arbor full time. The BBQ visit will help, but an official for the ND night game could seal it...

...and a two year bowl ban for OSU wouldn't hurt either!

  1. I think Dunn will get the hard sell at the BBQ.

A bowl ban will happen. I think the NCAA is long over due for a make up call. They are tired of out of control programs, and the general and accurate perception that they can't stop the cheating.

Bad press regarding Cam Newton, bad press about the 5 game ban, but allowing those guys to play in their bowl game, all translate into a royal beeyatch slapping for the bucky boys.

I think it's between AL and MI for Dunn. I would not be surprised if he gives a silent verbal by the end of the weekend.

  2. Wasn't there some chatter recently that Dunn had reaffirmed his commitment to Ohio?

    ReplyDelete
  3. I think he was quoted as saying that he remains an ohio commit, but that a multi-year bowl ban would be a deal breaker.

The fact that he and his dad made it to AA right after T got the boot, and excrement really began to arrive at the intake of the air circulator, speaks volumes.

  4. Wouldn't surprise me to see Wormley, Dunn, and a DT go Blue before the season begins.

  5. Bri'onte Dunn

There is a post on Bucknuts titled "Bri'onte Dunn wants to visit Michigan?". One of the comments on that post on page two says "spoke with him yesterday. he is decommitting". about 90% of the comments on the page are blocked for members only. If any of you want to go over there and have a look.......

  6. I was very iffy about Dunn a few weeks ago. But after the Kalis commit, and reading that he does NOT want to go to a program with bowl bans, it seems like he is going to follow Kalis in regards to not wanting to be punished for something he didn't do. I still like Juwan Lewis, but I wouldn't say no to Dunn.

  7. I was just doing my daily rounds of Michigan sites. I know its the "bleacher report" but its still somebody's opinion. He had us losing to SDSU 27-21, MSU 28-27, Illinois 37-30, and Nebraska 21-20. Winning the rest of the games, thats 8-4. Now 8-4 isn't an unrealistic number, but SDSU and Illinois? SDSU has a good QB and RB, but their top two receivers are gone, and their defense isn't anything to write home about. Not to mention, they are also going through a coaching change, and we all know how that goes. Illinois' D is just as bad as our was (obviously by the score last year) and they don't have their rush attack anymore.

I also think that our defense will be vastly improved, but for different reasons that what I've been seeing. Yes we're getting our two CB's back in woolfolk and floyd. Yes, we are returning many starters who had no experience last year. But I think the reason we'll be most improved, is that our defensive players are BUYING into this new system. They are excited about the change, they are enthusiastic. I think a big reason why they were so unsuccessful last year (besides the 3-3-5, GERG) was because you won't play well in a scheme you don't believe in.

  8. Lalondtm,

I really like Lewis too but Dunn would be my first choice. It really is a win-win so......first come, first served.

As for Bleacher reports picks ???? Here were my picks for those games:
    SDSU 24-20 Michigan Win
    MSU 31-34 Michigan Loss
    Illinois 35-31 Michigan Win
    Nebraska 24-31 Michigan Loss

I also have us losing to OSU for a 9-3 record BUT I have us losing a close one to either Notrs Dame or Iowa for a final record of 8-4

As for the SDSU game.....I think we win but for some scary unknown reason.....that game does make me nervous.....to many unknowns

    ReplyDelete
  9. Our defense is going to be what loses our games this year. They'll be better, but not good enough. I honestly don't believe our offense will skip a beat this year. So any team that beats us this year, the blame falls on defense. SDSU won't be able to stop our offense as much as we can stop theirs, same with Illinois. In a perfect world, we can pressure Cousins enough to make mistakes (he's terrible under pressure), and that will win us a close one in East Lansing. Also, (in a perfect world) Nebraska takes a BEATING in B1G play before they come to AA, and it shows. I think theirs a possible win there if the beating theory holds true. For some reason I could see a loss to NW. Persa can NOT be underestimated, and if hes 100%, we could be in trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I see us losing to OSU, Nebraska, MSU, and Iowa. Other games that worry me are Notre Dame, Northwestern, and SD state. Just my opinion. I don't have any really good reasons...just my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  11. We should get Juwan Lewis, excellent player plus in-state recruit. I'd like to wrap up the state of michigan. Benji, what do you think of our chances of getting him

    ReplyDelete
  12. Zero chance of Lewis if Dunn commits. Lewis and Dunn aren't even on the same level. Look at the tape and the higher level of competition that Dunn plays against. I bet Lewis is a nice kid, but I want to win, I want Dunn.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I'd rather have Fuller than Dunn.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I really think that we will see how much we want a running back on e the season starts. If the running backs are very good, but none of the underclassmen receivers perform then people are going to say that we don't want Dunn we want receivers. And vice versa

    ReplyDelete
  15. Fuller is the total package. He can run, throw, defend and catch (I'm assuming.) I'd gladly take Fuller over Dunn. I think Dunn is great and all ,but id still go Fuller.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Quick note. My take on the season will be this in a nut shell. D will be vastly improved over last year but the O will suffer. It will be a toss up year that will show progress in the right direction but won't wow anyone.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Dunn is the most important prospect that i feel we have to get after wormley and pipkins... he just the big back we need and he just reminds me of the Michigan Backs of the past like Anthony Thomas.. but most importantly if we get Dunn to this class it almost a fact we get Dymonte Thomas to the 2013 class probably the top athlete in the midwest.. thomas is foreal he had 116 tackles, six sacks and two interceptions last year. and just to have Jarrod And Dymonte as your two safties is crazy... and the 2013 class is going to be out of this world if they can recruit like they did this class

    ReplyDelete
  18. From the reading and interviews I have checked out it looks like Michigan wants a FB, OL, RB, 1-2 WR, a DT and a DE. I would say that DE Wormley, DT Pipkins, RB Dunn, OL Diamond, FB E.J. Fatu are the likely pick ups for their respective positions but your guess is as good as mine at WR. Obviously they are high on Stanford but I think that is unlikely and Burbridge seems like a risk at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with james that if we get Dunn, that pretty much locks up Thomas. I'm not sure he's big enough to be Anthony Thomas, but he has the potential. Somebody on an earlier post mentioned the similarities of Justice Hayes to Mike Hart when Hart first came to UM. Hayes is identical to Hart, (at this point, he'll need to gain weight) but I would love to see another Mike hart OR AT on the team, either way will work :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think Thomas Rawls looks more like Mike Hart on the videos. One thing I noticed about him just like Mike Hart he is always keeping his legs moving.

    ReplyDelete
  21. How's everybody feel about taking Obrien and Pipkins this weekend. I'm callin it now. Both guys are gonna want to jump on board once they are with the rest of the team. I'll say pass on FB, Wormely should commit this weekend and if he doesn't then we need to move on to the next one (aka nobody). Also drop Diamond and get a package deal with Garnett and Banner. This way we fill the lines completely and focus on Dunn and a receive like Payton or whoever the staff feels is a good blocker and big target with get hands.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Brad,

I agree like your assessment, and think that Michigan would end up with one of the best classes in it's history.

One of the many offered WR's will probably accept, maybe as early as the BBQ. The only way MI takes two is if one of their lower picks verbals early, and a much higher pick wants to commit late. Even then, they may opt for another lineman instead.

    Likewise with Fatu and Dunn.

I'm not at all worried about getting the pick of the 2013 WR litter, if no one commits this year. We already have the best QB of 2013. That's why I thing a WR will commit soon. They want a spot on this train.

Those who wait for the music to stop better be happy with their remaining seating options......

    ReplyDelete
  23. JH,

    Love the way you think!

I agree that the atmosphere at the BBQ will sway some kids into verbals. They will just know they want to be part of this phoenix.

No one is going to get more love than O'Brien, and I bet he goes blue. The rest may not even be attending.

This staff wants kids that have a passion about playing for Michigan, not just a top program. They will cool on potential superstars that don't show them that passion, and move on to those who do.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I hope Sheldon Day comes to the BBQ. He seemed like a michigan lean, until his coach got involved and swayed him to look at other schools. I'd love to have him, but I'm afraid he may decide to late.

    ReplyDelete
  25. As per Scout National Rankings, this is what jholko had to say:

"How's everybody feel about taking #99 and #178 this weekend. I'm callin it now. Both guys are gonna want to jump on board once they are with the rest of the team. I'll say pass on FB, #114 should commit this weekend and if he doesn't then we need to move on to the next one (aka nobody). Also drop #40 and get a package deal with #24 and #46. This way we fill the lines completely and focus on #29 and a receive like #56 or whoever the staff feels is a good blocker and big target with get hands.

I agree with BlueMarrow.....I love the way BH thinks. The lowest ranked player on Scout.com is Pipkins at #178th Nationally.....how dare we stoop that low. Kidding obviously.

This is going to be a great class.

  26. bleacher report just posted a story about the next 7 UM commits. Lewis, Fatu, Wormley, Madaris, O'Brien, Bisnowaty, Burbidge.

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/774888-predicting-michigans-final-seven-commitments-for-the-2012-recruiting-class

I agree with him on the RB situation. Do we really need one? We got shaw and cox as a senior, Hopkins and Toussaint are only sophmores, and Rawls and Hayes are freshman.

    ReplyDelete
  27. No we don't need a runningback. Next year we may be able to get a top 5 runningback.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Goblue, I get what you are saying but you cannot just go by one recruiting site. Anybody who focuses on stars or rankings doesn't understand what we need. RR destoryed our lines with small fast pulling OL and thus our defense suffered bc nobody paid any attention to it. Two 300lbs dl and another one on ol is the direction we need to go if we run the prostyle offense and a 4-3 D jsn

    ReplyDelete
  29. I know.......having fun :) I have a pretty good understanding about what we need. I think it might be good news that players in positions of need that have offers and are interested are so highly ranked. I'm assuming that you want "Two 300lbs dl and another one on ol is the direction we need to go if we run the prostyle offense and a 4-3 D jsn" that are well ranked. For what it's worth most of our prospects for the last of our positions are well ranked on Scouts, Rivals, 247 and ESPN.

    ReplyDelete
  30. cox is a redshirt junior not a senior.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I am much more optimistic than that list on the Bleacher Report. We will find a fullback, either a walk on or someone from another position. I only see us taking Dunn, I know Lewis looks pretty good on film but he isn't a star. I believe Justice Hayes (I already stated on this blog that he has the same body as Mike Hart) and Rawls will always be higher than him on the depth chart. I know this sounds bad and it is certainly not meant to be a shot at Lewis, but why would the coaches use a scholarship on a backup when we have stars still on the board? I also see us picking up another elite lineman (Diamond, Garnett, Banner, or maybe Peat). I see us taking two WRs (Burbridge, Stanford, Peyton, Mondras, or Powe). I see us getting three DLs (O'brien, Pipkins, Wormley, Day, or Washington).

    ReplyDelete
  32. @Mark
Agreed about the runningback situation. I believe we will you the last spot on Fuller.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Davon,

You really do love Fuller don't you. He is good, really good.....do you think we get him or not?

    ReplyDelete
  34. GBN great point that's his fourth comment on fuller in a day (im not saying it's bad, just funny). One interesting thing about Fuller is that Rivals Espn 247 all list him as an Athlete and his ratings are #37 #40 and #17 but Scout lists him as a QB and he is the #150 player. My point, he is valued much more for versatility than QB skills. I believe that is exactly what we need, he could fill one of many different positions of need and he is no slouch at QB either.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @GBN
    Could you tell? Hahaha.
depends on the RB situation. As I see it we will get: 2 DT, 1 DE, 2 WR, and 1 O Lineman. That leaves one spot. If Dunn commits to us before the season then we don't get Fuller. If we don't get dunn (or a fullback) or another RB. Then we take Fuller. Also lot is on the shoulders of denard to have a good season.

I knows it's just Ace. But at least it's something!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I read that Ace article. I like the stonum info. He's very good, just gets in trouble a lot. Part of me says kick him off the team, he's had 3 strikes. But part of me says now that Hoke is in charge, he gets a clean slate because RR didn't discipline well.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Good, bad or indifferent, Ace does provide us with some food for thought. I'm very intrigued about the progress of Drew Dileo! Sounds like he can be our version of Wes Welker. Looking forward to finally seeing Tom Brady back in the Big House. Hopefully we can schedule a lot of recruits to attend that game so they can be in awe of him!

    ReplyDelete
  40. The last recruits will play out more by best availability and timing than by "how many do we want to take." We could end up with Wormley, Dunn, and a DT before the season begins, leaving us with 4 spots left. If we're scrambling to find even 1 top WR and have 3 other 5star prospects at other positions who all want to commit then we could end up with only 1 WR in this class. If our other prospects back off and we have 2 top receivers and ATH Fuller all wanting in we maybe end up with "3" WRs. They'll definitely take another OL so we could likely have 1 DE, 1 DT, 1 RB, and 1 OL with 3 spots remaining. The coaches want a WR for sure so the last 2 spots are the real "flux" scholarships who I think will go to best available, or biggest depth need after the coaches actually get to see what their team, and the incoming freshmen look like this Fall.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Michael I think the best thing about what you said is that Michigan has options and thats always a great thing to have.

  42. Guys and Gals,

    How many and who??

  47. whats the outlook on Darius Powe?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Depends on where you look. Scout says he is the #70 receiver in the country, Rivals says he is a top 250 guy, and Espn even has him as #85 player in the country. That makes him are highest rated receiving target on Espn. I like him, I have no clue why scout hates him so much. I have him tied for third on my wish list.

  49. It really SUCKS. NCAA announced today that osu will not be charged with failure to monitor. Therefore they will not get any post seaon ban since without that charge no team has ever recieved a ban. I guess that's why they are the Suckeyes.

    ReplyDelete
  50. The NCAA only mentioned Tatgate, not any of the other allegations. It is still a very real possibility that they get Loic.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That does suck, but I'm not counting it out, not till they meet with the NCAA. My hope is that the NCAA will still punish them to try and make a point that they are sick of programs breaking the rules.

    ReplyDelete
  52. When Ohio received their notice of allegations from the NCAA on April 25, it did not include "failure to monitor". Since then, the school's done everything they can to make Sweater Vest the fall guy, so I'm not surprised from today's announcement. Sadly, they're going to limit this to him and say he paid the ultimate price by losing his job. As far as penalties, I'm thinking some scholarship losses and additional years added on to their pathetic self-imposed 2 years. It sucks the NCAA cannot make an example of a head coach that gets caught and lies about it! Very contradictory, since USC got nailed when they never could prove Pete Carroll knew anything about Bush's shenanigans!

    ReplyDelete
  53. The author of the SI article on osu tweeted this" NCAA met with SI source on OSU story, said it couldn't grant him confidentiality. So, players walk. Happens. SI story still 100% accurate"

    ReplyDelete
  54. This means we need to forget about Dunn and several other OSU leans and we could also lose Kalis with this announcement.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Chris,

Disagree. Kalis is coming to the BBQ with his coach. Strobel is also coming. They are already well on their way to bonding with their new teammates, and are said to be aggressively recruiting for Michigan.

No one knows what will happen between the NCAA and ohio between now and signing day. It's still all speculation. The recent turn may motivate someone else to come forward, because they think it's unfair for Tress to be made the fall guy. Tress may even have an axe to grind, and find a way to take someone down through a second party disclosure or "anonymous" tip.

And, here's are some questions for you: Who's the
next long term bucky coach? What usually happens to new coaches following a legend? Let's just assume they can lure in Urban Meyer. Would you stake your 4-5 year college career on ohio, and a guy who broke down at Florida, quitting twice in two years?

Still too many unanswered questions down there. Questions that Stobel and Kalis have already had answered to their satisfaction in Ann Arbor.

As I've said before, I think Dunn is more likely to go to AL than Michigan. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Dunn, and would love to have him. But guys like Kalis and Morris are the foundation for the future. Backs are a dime a dozen. One minute they are Dunn, the next minute they are Dee Hart.

Getting Dunn just means missing out on the best option in 2013. Just like getting TP would have meant missing out on DR.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I agree that Kalis will stay a wolverine. It would be too difficult for him to be accepted by OSU and their fans. The haters would never deep down forgive him for committing to Michigan. They would make his life miserable. Strobel is all in regardless. Washington and his sidekick reciever will be OSU or Alabama. The best recruits for Michigan are ones who want to wear the Michigan colors!

    ReplyDelete
  57. What do u guys think this does to state with Pittman? He's already a soft commit so sparty is about to lose their top recruit. Also what's this do for Diamond and Wormley. Sorry but I've had enough of both of them. We need to stop waiting on them and focus on those who want to be consistantly in the big 10 championship game.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think some people are overreacting to this news, one report comes out in favor of osu and we are already speculating what many recruits will do as a result. There can be much more to come out in different parts of this investigation, or some big shot lawyer who is a michigan fan could somehow find a way to get the source of the SI article to testify with confidentiality. Let's not forget if just one person involved comes forward and testifies to the NCAA and has hard facts against osu then that could lead to LOIC. And then people will begin to speculate that we will get every single breathing football player from Ohio.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Mark, I agree completely. And, I would add that guys like TP, who was once their hero, and now their goat, might just be a bit miffed at the fan base.

How's this for an idea: Write a book on the subject and offer the principal cast of characters a profit sharing opportunity, if they come clean. First they open up for a fee, then they have nothing to lose to keep blabbing.

Jhol, I don't think anyone is waiting for any one person to decide anything. I think MI has offers out to groups of prospects at every position they wish to fill. First come, first served.

The staff have been adamant: Don't verbal if you are not sure. They are not holding anything against the kids that are not sure, and neither should we.

That's one of the many things wrong with this whole "verbal" thing, and why I'm in favor of an early signing period. Either sign or don't sign. the whole verbal thing is too subjective, variable, and inherently unpredictable.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Very good point. Its hard not to read into all the hype. I was thinking last night that these guys have yet to even start practicing for their senior year. It is nice to see these guys jumping on board but now I think the coaches can be more seletive with their final spots. Just think WHEN we go atleast 8-4 this year. The recruits will be flying to Mich with a 5 star qb and a 5 star OL from our own state. Great foundation to start with. Def next year the staff should be more selective with their offers.

    ReplyDelete
  61. jh,

More selective, maybe. But I think they will go the way of the Longhorns in trying to wrap things up early with their top prospects.

And, I agree that a snowball element is in play. It will build on itself, and keep rolling. We have the QB. It remains to be seen who will be Morris's RT, and we need a breakout year from a RB, and the addition of a guy like Dunn in this class, or next.

More food for the hungry, for those who may not have seen it:

  62. Wyatt Shallman has a chance to be the big back that we would want in the next class. And Stanford named his top five and we are not in it.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I said it over at MLive to a Buckeye laughing at our pickup (he's in denial) of Kalis -- in which he essentially trashed Kalis as an immature fame seeker who will jump ship: Kalis won't de-commit a second time. He seems like a kid who wants to be coached by a good man, at an elite program. He has that. He is from Pittsburgh and has no allegiance to OSU.

I grew up in NW Ohio, and despite Kalis saying the borders are now opening -- they've always been open. Northern Ohio is 49/49/2 in terms of Michigan, OSU or Notre Dame. My high school celebrates the rivalry game week, where half the students roam around in Michigan gear and half in OSU. Just because their high school is in one sate, that does not make them inclined to be indebted to that state. I lived closer to AA than C-bus. Anyways, there's a great article today about our recruits over at Ann Arbor.com, where they discuss the solidness of our commitments and their potentials:

  64. Notes from the Gridiron Kings Event.....

Defensive back Terry Richardson from Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech is still committed to Michigan but he will take other official visits it appears. Alabama, USC and LSU are the three schools in addition to Michigan he'd like to visit and the Tide are making a strong push.

  66. Prof,
Thanks for the link. I needed a fix this morning.

    balla,
No one seems to know. I really like the kid, and the fact that Michigan is his dream team.

May have just been a clerical error, although there obviously will be some LB and TE movement, either to other positions, or other teams.

Michigan football, college prospects, Texas, and secrets don't go very well together. It should be a short wait....

  67. My realistic and hopeful 7 spots

    1.Jordan Diamond OL
    2.Aaron Burbridge WR
    3.Danny O’Brien DT
    4.Chris Wormley DE
    5.Ondre Pipkins DT
    6.Monty Madaris WR
    7.E.J. Fatu FB

This is my best guess list trying to be realistic and not just picking all the top players. What is everyone elses guess at this point?

  68. Re: Kellen Jones

Some reports I believe Scouts are reporting that he is off of the team (temporarily or permanently????) due to legal issues. There goes some immediate help in position and some much needed immediate depth.

    ReplyDelete
  69. GBN,

I find it hard to believe. Stonum was front webpage news on ESPN and SI for about 2 weeks.

If something legally related got this far, this quiet, I will be shocked. Too many people are ready to fire an arrow at Hoke. Seems far fetched it stayed quiet in Texas, in particular.

  71. Kellen Jones rumor has it isbeing investigated for a possible assault on a female. It's grapevine rumor, hope it is not true. If it is he will be probably be gone. the reason it is not out is that it is still in investigation and no charges yet. Moving on, 7 days to bbq and all hell breaking loose with verbals.

Bucknuts are saying Kellen assaulted a female and the reason that it's not out there is because UofM has the media under control.....yes because we even control all of the media outlets in Texas.

Those same morons are reporting that our BBQ this weekend was a bust!!! Yes I know...

Right now it's all rumour and nothing more.

  76. What's Kellen's status? Meaning if he's still under the age of 18 maybe that's why no info is out there? If he's over 18, then I'm pretty surprised that there's nothing in the news anywhere... Hopefully nothing comes of it for both Michigan's sake as well as for Kellen. Don't want to start your life off with a black mark on your record like this...

  77. AND ANOTHER THING

These Morons consistently refer to Hoke's negative recruiting which BTW, I would be opposed to and don't for a minute believe is happening. This is my Sunday venting!!!!

  78. Kellen Whitney Jones born February 1st, 1993.....he's 18. If he were already charged, we would know.....SO. He may still be under investigation and not yet charged or there is BS in the air. Bottom line is he's not on Roster.

We lose Jones, OSU might get this BS sweetheart deal and my daughter's tuition is due next week!!!! I'm gonna end it all!!

In all seriousness good look to Jones either way.

  79. OK, I'll get excited about verbals, and visits.

But I draw the line way in front of top 15 lists on Facebook!

If it means anything, which I doubt, more power to him. Best of luck at SMU.
