Kalis commits

ESPN150 OT Kyle Kalis has committed to Michigan today whilst on his second visit to Ann Arbor in recent weeks. He was apparently very close to pulling the trigger on his first visit, so I think most people expected a commitment this time around.

If you've been hiding under a rock, you should know that Kalis was once the crown jewel of Ohio State's recruiting class, so this is a big steal for Michigan. In a way, his commitment further strengthens the view of Michigan being on the rise, whilst OSU is seemingly in free fall. A commitment post will follow later today.

Next player to steal, Brionte Dunn... :P

  1. Go Blue!

I'm hopeful that the ESPN and SI NCAA football sections will feature a piece on this, and the 2012 class in general.

Not just gloating, but great advertising! Penetration, and free of charge!

It would not surprise me at all if Dunn is a silent commit.

Washington and Stanford had better either book passage, or find another ship, because this one's getting ready to hoist anchor, with 19 now on board!!!

  2. Kalis said he would have commited a few weeks ago but his coaches told him to wait ...Also said he has been recruiting other players as well

  3. This staff is amazing. If they follow this up with 2 more great classes next year and the year after then look the f-out for Michigan.

  4. I just hope they can coach as well as they recruit ..

  5. Domino effect. Kalis is a huge name, and it won't be long before some of these other players we're waiting on, washington/stanford, wormley, diamond, pipkins etc jump on board to make sure they have a spot. I'd be surprised if we didn't land all the above mentioned.

  6. Dunn and Washington I doubt the rest probably so

  7. yea I don't expect dunn at all, I think he's staying with OSU.

  8. What a great way to start the grand finale of recruiting for this class. Getting a player as highly ranked as Kalis to commit this early (...well, what would normally be early) is a huge advantage for what remains of this recruiting class.

  9. TomVH has been talking about other top recruits watching Kalis to see where he'd go. Talent follows talent.

  10. You guys could be right about Dunn.

    Just one question:

Who's going to block for him?

Seriously, I think it's more likely Dunn jumps to AL than it is that he stays with os.

Kalis is a shot heard throughout the state of Ohio. It makes the Strobel switch look like no big deal.

    1. Permanent HC unknown

    2. Sanctions unknown

    3. Recruiting class on the verge of being a lost year, by their standards.

The ones that were thinking about it are leaving. The ones that were staying, are now thinking about it. It's human nature.

  11. Amen, Michael.

Winners want to win. Players want to play with players.

Payton's Fab-5 comment comes to mind......

  12. And for some more good news for us, there is a very real chance our class could be the number one class on scout according to last years rankings (#1 was Auburn with 25 commits and a star average of 3.76). Our next 8 commits could be: Kalis (5 star), Diamond (5 star), Stanford (4 star), Peyton (4 star), some runningback or fullback (3 star), Washington (5 star), Pipkins/O'brien (4 star), and Wormley (4 star). We would have 26 commits with a star rating of 3.77. This would have been number one last year.

  13. Ohio state is doing everything it can to hold on to their commits while we just keep rolling, couldn't be happier!

  14. Recruit class rankings have almost nothing to do with # of 5 stars, but number of above 3 stars. There have been classes with 4-5 5stars but only 23 kids, while a class with 26-28 can have 1 5 star but be ranked higher because almost all the rest are 4 stars. If we have 8 or fewer 3 stars in a class of 26 then we could very well have the #1 overall class statistically.

  15. @ michael
Thanks for the clarification, I forgot to mention that we are going to have one of the largest classes in the country. Does anyone know that actuall formula for recruiting rankings?

  16. osu announced that it will be hiring Mike Vrabel. Didn't he get arrested a few months back? Nice hire...

  17. I wish, jelly fish. In my eyes a class with 4-5 5stars beats a class with only 1 but scout/rivals go on average instead of cieling. An NFL team with 4-5 first round draft picks obviously wins the draft over a team with maybe 1 late first round pick but more 3rd-4th round picks IMO. I remember seeing something about the formulas on MGo in the last few days but I don't remember where TBO.

  18. im so glad we fired RR...theres no way he woulda been able to put this kind of a class together..but on which site is kalis rated a 5* because on espn they only have him at 4

    ReplyDelete
  19. Scout and he is only one player away from being a five star on rivals. He will be one by the end of the year for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  20. yea rivals will have him at 5* once all the camps and stuff have been run. probably within a month or two of signing day.

  21. Just a thought that I was wondering if anyone else shares: what if at the end of the year OSU had a terrible year, Fickell gets fired and they bring someone like Meyer or Stoops in? How many guys do you think would possibly jump ship and go back to OSU? By that time a lot of our prior targets will probably have committed elsewhere. So how much scrambling would we have to do to fill back up? Guys like Kalis, and Strobel were always big OSU fans, amd Washington, if he commits had been considered a lock for osu when recruiting initially started heating up. I think a lot would be affected by any NCAA sanctions too. Just postulating, and seeing what you guys think as well.

  22. @ goblue1213

IF (and thats a big if) Meyer or Stoops came in, I could possibly see one or two guys jump ship. I don't know if Kalis could, he'd be facing a lot of ridicule by jumping back and forth. Luckily though, I HIGHLY doubt Meyer or Stoops would take the job, especially if they are walking into bowl bans etc. I thought I read that Stoops had announced he wasn't going anywhere, and Meyer can have any job he wants, so he'll be picky, and he won't want to come to a school that is free falling and has lost power to the rest of the B1G. IMO anyways

  23. Very Little chance of that happening..i believe that when you transfer within in conference you have to sit out 2 years.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I could be wrong tho...Im not sure Justin Boren had to sit out 2 years

  25. @5302.....

True but if OSU names a head coach before National Signing day, then theres no penalty, all UM has now are verbals.

  26. After reading the posts on bucknuts and hearing how osu fans treat their "traitors" I dont see Kalis and Strobel going to OSU

    ReplyDelete
  27. Yea I agree with you, lalondtm. It is a huge if that one of those guys would go to OSU. It was just a curiosity and to see what someone else's opinion because it is a possibility, even tho it is a remote one. Pipkins, Washington, Stanford, Diamond, Wormley to finish out the class. Then maybe we could score on one of the other elite linemen from the west coast. Any way this class rounds out it will be one of the best Michigan classes we've had in awhile. GO BLUE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I still say Diamond will not go to UM.I believe coaches choose. You snooze you lose.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The coaches are going to be real picky on who they take now.

  30. Pipkins and O'Brien to visit Michigan at the end of this month..
