Commitment Profile: Jarrod Wilson

Name: Jarrod Wilson

Location: Akron, OH

Position: FS

Ratings: ESPN – 4* (80), Scout – 4*, 247 Sports 4*

Recruitment: We all know of the troubles OSU have had in recruiting this year, but in actual fact they were always going to lose a lot of top in state players due to a lack of scholarship spaces. Jarrod Wilson is a consensus four star recruit, but the Buckeyes did not offer. This left the door open for Michigan, who happened to have a great connection to Wilson through his high school coach, former UM RB Ricky Powers. Things didn't look great though when Wilson classed himself as a package deal with WR Corey Smith, who did not get a Michigan offer. But as with most package deals, it fell apart and Wilson choose the school that fitted him best. Had a final three of Notre Dame, UM and Penn State.

Offers: Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, UConn, Stanford, UCLA, West Virginia, Michigan State, Vanderbilt, Illinois and others.

Stats: Currently stands at 6'2 and 190lbs. Runs the forty yard dash in 4.58 seconds. 52 tackles as a junior. Had 10 interceptions and returned 5 for touchdowns. Had one fumble recovery which was returned 98 yards for a touchdown.

ESPN Analysis: Wilson should emerge as an upper-tier free safety prospect in 2012. Has a lot of traits you look for at the position both physically and mentally. Possesses great size. Tall, well-built with good length and room to fill out.

Displays great range and has good enough speed to play the position, but his best attribute might be his reads. He's very rarely caught out of position and his deep coverage is advanced for the high school level. Takes good angles to the ball and attacks it at the highest point with sound ball skills. Has the ability to cover slot receivers, but is probably more suited to deep zone coverage.

Also takes good angles to the ball in run defense, and although he needs to be more physical to play in the box, overall he's a solid tackler. In summary, doesn't have outstanding athleticism, but his knowledge and reading of the game is exceptional.

Improvements: Might want to get a little bigger, maybe just over the 200lb mark so he'll be more effective in the run game. Will also have to work on man coverage to deal with the quicker slot receivers in college.

Film Highlights: Link here.

Final Thoughts: Wilson is a consensus four star, and one at a position of need; so this is a great pickup for the Wolverines. He's a true ballhawking safety, something that Michigan has lacked, and will probably still lack this season unless Carvin Johnson excels.

Wilson will be the last DB taken in this class, which means grayshit commitment Jeremy Clark will not get a scholarship offer for 2012. He'll either be a part of the 2013 class, or perhaps more likely look elsewhere if he brings in some good offers for 2012.

As for playing time, well despite the recent struggles of the UM secondary, it could take Wilson a while to get into a starting position. Michigan has a few young and talented safeties like Marvin Robinson, Carvin Johnson, Josh Furman etc, and whilst some of these might end up at SS, it's likely that one of them could lock down the FS role for at least a couple of years.

Jarrod is commitment #18 in this class, so space is getting pretty tight, but the talent level on the defensive side of the ball is just ridiculous. A good DT plus a top DE and this could be the #1 defensive class overall.

  1. Now we need 2 DT's preferably Pipkins and Shittu ill take O'Brien of not Shittu...Then we have a whole defense which is crazy

  2. Go Blue. Hoke can really recruit and the young men we are getting know that playing for Michigan now will lead to NFL opportunities like in the past. The dying days of no NFL 1st rounders will disappear under Hoke. We're back!!!!

  3. UMFAN323: I think UM will only take 1 more DT in this class and bank on either Godin or Wormley growing into a DT (much more likely Godin).

  5. Benji,
Now that UM has the Def. back field lock-up who maybe next. Is there an truth to the rumor that Kalis is visiting this weekend with his parents?

  6. OSU self-imposed punishment is a joke. The NCAA should hit them harder for thinking the NCAA is that stupid. WE should be very thankful for the firing of Rich Rod ESPN is saying he is in more trouble for the stuff he did at WV. I am very thankful for coach Hoke and staff. The new staff is the best and we the fans can't say enough good things about them.

  7. I love the fact we have signed an entire defense, giving we get one DT. I think Hoke's best recruit was Mattison!! All these kids are jumping at the opportunity to play for him, and he has to be one of, if not, the best recruiters. Michigan will soon be back to prominence!! Go Blue!!!

    Interesting read I think.

    What a joke.

  9. I agree that this could be the #1 defensive class overall. Which is a good thing, I miss the good ole days where people feared Michigan because of their defense. Ahhh Classic College Football on the Big Ten Network, what would I do without you

  10. I also agree with many peoples opinions that we need a big time WR in this class. What is the back up if Stanford decides to go somewhere else, where do we stand? How is everyone feeling about payton? Personally I'd like to see a big time WR, keyword big. Someone around 6'4, 6'5 or so, it's been quite sometime since we've had a big body dominate receiver (braylon edwards). If Hoke wants to bring back Michigan football, I agree our defense needs to be tough, we need to run the ball, but we need that #1 Jersey out there too.

  11. I say we pursue both of them and take both of them if they commit, but I am fine with just one of them. Top rated WRs can usually transfer strait to colleg and have an impact freshman year, so if we miss out on these guys it is not horrible because we could still land top WRs next year for when we really need them.

  12. @ Mark. True true. It depends on which site you check, but Rivals has Michigan in consideration for DGB. The more I read up on him, the more I want him in Maize n Blue. He looks like the next Calvin Johnson.

On a seperate note, this article says Kalis COMMITTED to UM two weeks ago, but hasn't made it public for fear of harrassment.

  13. If we do not take a WR this year our depth chart for the year 2013 (two years from this upcoming year) will be Jeremy Jackson, Jerald Robinson, Drew Dileo, Jeremy Gallon, and Bo Dever as a redshirt freshman. I don't think we want our starting flankers to be Jeremy Jackson and Jerald Robinson. (Maybe Ricardo Miller will move back to WR Idk) And what do you people think of William Mahone he's one of the top backs in the country and I believe he is from michigan and a power back, why haven't we offered him?

  14. @ will
We would have to get a couple top flight receivers for 2013 class, I'm not saying it is ideal, but it could work.
And I have no club why we haven't offered him, he looks like an ideal back that we could get. And he doesn't seem to have any academic issues seeing as northwestern and notre dame have both offered him.

  15. Yea, a couple top flight receivers in 2013 i guess is possible with shane morris on board. Hopefully Jackson and J rob get better. I've seen Jackson play live as he grew up on the opposite side of town i am (Go Pioneer! if any of you guys have ties to them.) and when i saw him he had great hands and seemed very knowledgeable on the football field and ran good clean routes. I think he can be a good possession receiver kind of like a Laterryal Savoy for us. Let me know you guys' thoughts

  16. Does anyone know how our recruits did in the 7v7 and the 1v1

    ReplyDelete
  17. Anybody know when Kalis is announcing

    ReplyDelete
  18. Wow, looking at the video, I thought all he did was take interceptions to the house. Wasn't until a minute and a half when he was tackled. We are getting such an injection of talent next year. I am giddy like a school girl

  19. I'm just throwin this out there. Jarrod Wilson at wideout in 2012?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Jut-

You may be correct. It would be a way for him to see the field earlier. Also, I LOVE the thought of having a safety that can hit, AND wants to compete as a RETURN man. Are you kidding me?

I thought that OTHER coach was the only one who could recruit speed and athleticism to Michigan!

I agree with the other comments about WR. It's not the end of the world if MI does not land a top recruit this year.

Lal- As I've posted many times, I think Thompson could be just the WR you envision. I think that's why he still has an offer. He's no TE in the Big Ten.

As for Kalis: It would not surprise me at all if Kalis and Dunn were silent commits. If you were them, living where they do, would you announce it publicly before you had to?

I've heard horror stories of what it's been like, dealing with the bucky boy faithful, during the last few months. And, they were stories about GROWN, PROFESSIONAL men. Acting like pouting children. Imagine what it's like on the HS level. Kids, teachers, administrators...eeeeekkkk.

I bet they wait until sanction time, then announce. Saying, in effect, we had no choice.

Although you have to believe Dunn caught the headline bout AL being thin at RB....

  21. Thompson at WR? he runs like a 5.3 forty

  22. I read on scout that they are opening up Schembechler Hall early today and a picture of Kyle Kalis are we on a commit watch? I can't read the whole article I do not have a subsription to scout so I could not read the whole thing

    ReplyDelete
  23. Once again have faith and watch what happens next ! Do work- Go blue !

    ReplyDelete
  24. I wanna know how stadifer did covering stafford? Also on scout with no subscription... Lol

  25. Someone on twitter is saying that Wilson will enroll early so will that open up one more spot?

    ReplyDelete
  26. It doesnt change how he is counting against the 85 scholarships. Since the coaches are looking at getting 26 commits then we need at least one person to enroll early, but I see us having a few people enroll early to open up room for people next year to enroll early.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Jeremy Clark isn't going to look around. He's %100 committed.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Will-

    Try 4.6. That's why he's considered a "tweener."

That's why I think he could be a Mike Williams or Mike Floyd

    ReplyDelete
  29. that is a very interesting commitment profile actually, I had read only some things about Jarrod Wilson on
per head service sport blog, but he seems a pretty good player
