Evening News

Word is that Alex Kozan is still deciding between Iowa, Michigan and Auburn, despite having committed to the Hawkeyes last week. This would really take the pressure off UM for the Diamond announcement, should they land Kozan. Not sure when a decision is coming just yet. In 2013 news, ESPN has changed up their schedule and released an early top 100. It's not really ranked, but the top 100 are given stars, Morris has five, Thomas has four; Standard.

  1. Hopefully UM can land Kozan. UM really needs to pick up a center.

That's great news for Morris and Thomas.

Sidenote: Monty Madaris has not signed his LOI. Has anything changed with him.

  2. Well I'd like to get both but if we can't Kozan is a must have cuz he can play center and guard but center is his best spot to make something happen early in his career...

  3. Well I guess we have a 33% chance on getting him. Plus him changing his mind on Iowa just yet is good news. I don't think this would affect Diamond's decision. They would be playing different positions.

This also made me think of Jordan Payton. What a joke. He commits to Cal. Then the guy who has been recruiting him since he was sophomore leaves Cal for Washington. So he decommits. That is understandable. Then I watch him commit to Washington last night on ESPNU. Which to me was still fine. Then I find out today that this morning he comitted to Cal. Only to sign with UCLA this afternoon. Nice job Payton. Extremely happy we didn't get this clown. This guy had like 2 or 3 hat ceremonies. Come on man!

  9. At Dantonio's Presser he made mention of the fact that once again, MSU snagged the #1 recruit in the state. To this I say that he KICKED OUR ASSES!!!! All Hoke and Co. managed was:

    MSU picked up #1 Burbridge

Tennessee picked up #6 in O'Brien

    and all we managed was

    #2 Ross

    #3 Richardson

    #4 Norfleet

    #5 RJS

    #7 Godin

    #8 Funchess

    #9 Ojemudia

    #10 Braden

Which would have been fine if we hadn't picked up

    #2 Bolden

    #3 Kalis &

    #4 Wormley in Ohio

    God he's good

    4. I just think they are delusional. Not they they will get diggs, but that because Neal didn't commit, that OBVIOUSLY means diggs is committing. Even though Diggs just agreed to take an official to Maryland this weekend, and most experts pick him going to Florida.

I wouldn't read into his tweets to much, a few months ago he was tweeting with Blake Countess about wearing the #1 jersey at Michigan

I just looked at ESPN150 for 2013. We have 60+ interested in UM. If we can only land 1/3 of them. : )

    ReplyDelete
  30. Every year that list is huge right now for the next years class. That isn't abnormal at all. Yes it would be nice to get that many and maybe end up with another great class. Lets wait and see what happens by the first spring practice. If Hoke and Co. are who I think they are we will see a lot of years with 20+ recruits verbally committed by Labor Day. I think that will be pretty normal. I don't anticipate any really crazy or exciting NSD in the future for us. We see who we want and we go after them. They committ early for this guy for some reason. I love that. Shows me these kids really are all in right away.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It also shows that the kids we get are more concerned about team than they are the attention or fanfare of NSD. I'm impressed with Hoke's recruiting. It might not be the best talent, but it appears the balance of talent and character is unmatched.

      Delete
  31. I just watched the UM Hoke press conference...again. Look at his face when they ask him if there will be any more commitments. He is trying SO hard not to smile. There will be another commitment (maybe 2) and it will be a very good player.

    Hoke isn't done yet.

  32. Just one observation regarding Meyer and tSIO's recruiting blitzkrieg they finished with: they poached several top-tier talent from many B1G Ten schools... except Michigan. And that is with us having many highly ranked Ohio guys as our verbals. To my knowledge, the only players we showed true, serious interest in that they got were Dunn & Reeves. Dunn was always committed to them anyways and Reeves followed his friend and not the quality of the institution. Hoke more than held his own against the glitz and flash of Meyer. Once we smash them again things will sway in our favor even more.

  33. THIS CLASS IS AWESOME! FEEL SORRY FOR THE KIDS THAT GET CUT FROM SUCKEYE. ..WE SHOULD TAKE THE GOOD ONES.

  34. I hate when people say it's not the best talent. What does that mean? We have a top ten class right now and its about to get better. Some fans are just never satisfied I guess... This is or best class in years. I love it. We have talent busting out the seams IMO.

    Go Blue.... Cha Ching!

    ReplyDelete
  35. I have a hard time liking meyer. Not because i am a Michigan fan either. I just think he is sneaky over commits. Then they let kids go for a phony reason. Now with the four year commitment when they sign up. School is guaranteed this is smart. Just seems hard for me to tell a kid no more scholarships for you. When these kid has been in school. Shows football comes first education second. Meyer will lie to your face. Tell you you will play etc. i think he is a great coach, good recruiter but a person who would steal you last dollar.

    ReplyDelete
  36. The one HUGE thing about oversigning that really irratates me is the cutting of student athletes that haven't "panned out." If a kid is cut for behavior (legal or in-house) I have no problem with that, every scholarship is give and take. But when a player as a RS Soph just hasn't gotten much better or lost his speed when he got bigger is cut that REALLY bothers me, because he was promised an education as long as he does X,Y, and Z. Coaches are coming to his door and wanting his athletic ability and the kid is giving of his time and effort in both the classroom and in all football related activites. That is why for a conference like the B1G that consists of so many great academic institutions we haven't seen this as an issue. For all the jokes we make about MSU, even there academics are far superior to most SEC and Big 12 schools. I am not an expert, but having spent 4 years coaching college basketball and having the opportunity to talk to families, education ALWAYS came up. Parents know that it is important, even when the kid cares more about the depth chart. If I offer a scholarship, it is a scholarship to be a STUDENT-athlete at my institution. I will offer my facilities, an education and my coaching ability to you in exchange for you showing up and working hard in pursuit of your degree and in your basketball-related activites. Only behavior detrimental to the university or divisive on our team makes his education/playing scholarship void and thats if we don't offer a chance of rehabilitation. Urban KNOWS he is going to cut the underperformers and it makes me SO angry how the NCAA and B1G allow this. Thank you Michigan for being men of your word.

  37. @Ron s.

Not the best talent, who's page are you looking at? Mlive.com did an article on Michigan recruiting worth reading, about the 5*'s that went bust, and the 2-3*'s that are beast in the NFL. Look at Tom Brady wasn't a high recruit at all, didn't play all that well @UM riding bench to two different QB's. Now he's a future hall of famer.

This isn't the case with this top 5 class. Top 5 of what 122??!!! Not the most talented my ass. Not only is it one of the nations best, it was pretty much complete from the get!

    ReplyDelete
  38. @smokey I agree with everything you said except for the Tom Brady comment about how he "wasn't a high recruit at all." Actually, he was a highly recruited QB from California. Most QB's don't play as freshmen, but he was neck and neck with the Brian Griese as a RS Sophomore for the starting gig. Tom Brady came in the same year as Charles Woodson (February of 1995). I remember a publication (this is all prior to Rivals, Scouts, 247, etc) called Blue Chip Recruiting, which I don't think is still in circulation that had him rated in their top 30 players nationally. In that class, Randy Moss was the top player in the country and Dan Kendra (went to Florida State #2 overall player) was the top QB in the country. I remember Ahman Green was right up there too. Charles Woodson was the #16 player overall and Michigan also got RB Clarence Williams, somewhere in the 80's. Tom Brady may not have had the crazy type of hype like Drew Henson or even Shane Morris, both who may be considered the #1 QB's in their respective classes. Bottom line, Brady was highly touted out of HS, but not as a NFL prospect.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Right now (using Touch the Banner numbers) we are sitting at 83 scholarships. This means we have room for two more (I thought we had room for three).

tSIO had 59 on scholarship and have signed 25 which means that they are at 84. They are still wanting Diggs, Diamond and nobody knows the real story on Neal yet. Assuming that they sign one of the 3 that would bring them to 85 or three above their allowed 82 for the next three years. As long as they lose three kids for legitimate reasons (real medicals, real transfers and possibly some of this years kids not qualifying) by August I have no problem with how they recruited. My only concern is what happens if none of those legitimate reasons for attrition occur. They have yet to over sign. The only thing that they've done so far is over recruit. I guess a coach doing things the right way would get up to his allotted number of scholarships and if there was any unexpected attrition give some up to a fifth year athlete or save it. BUT....that would be a coach doing it the right way.

    1. I have a feeling Ohio is going to land Diamond and maybe diggs and then cut several players. They are definitely big enough idiots to pull that kind of crap on hard working kids who committed to them. I just a bad feeling about Diamond especially because he has posted that he is going to shock the world with his pick. The biggest shock would be Ohio because everybody thinks he eliminated them.

    2. To over-recruit is to over-sign. Over-signing does not only refer to signing more than 25 players a year. It means having more LOI's signed than you have available scholarships, with the intent of getting rid of dead weight.

See Alabama the past two years, and now with their current class, I'm sure they didn't have 27 available spots: http://oversigning.com/testing/index.php/2011/07/22/alabamas-march-to-85-finished/

  43. I keep hearing that our class is less than amazing and that some seem disappointed. The only heartbreak that we ever seem to suffer is the big dog. We always seem to banter around some top recruit and then watch them go to USC or LSU or wherever. In the last 7 years we've only hauled in one top 10 (Rivals) recruit (and he transferred). Have a look at the list (year and ranking) and you'll see that we haven't done all that badly. It's not all about pulling in #1. It's also about balancing a number of top 100's, top 200's and so on and Michigan has consistently done this. First we need to win the state (8 of top 10 this year), Then pick up some talent in Ohio where the talent is rich and then spread the wealth. These coaches have done and will continue to do just that. I and am sure most of you thank them for that and are proud of what they've accomplished.

Hope I'm wrong and GO BLUE!!!

  46. Everyone can defend the 2012 class all they want. I have no doubt it is very talented. The fact remains that top-quality athletes from around the country are TRIPPING OVER THEMSELVES to commit to Urban Meyer. As far as I'm concerned, only two class rankings matter, and despite a huge head start, by no means do we finish clearly #1. For those of us hoping that the 2010's would be something like the 1990's, it's not feeling good.

OH wait they only have 1 bcs win this decade as well. Sorry that was a bad example. But your right the bucks are the greatest team in all the land. Just look at there history and tradition. All Michigan has is the most wins in ncaa history, highest winning percentage in ncaa history, most conference titles in ncaa history, and 11 national titles. Where do we get off even comparing ourselves to the bucks. Our class isn't talented at all? I Don't think so. I mean if you wanna get technical we beat last november with some the least talented recruiting classes in school history. So now that recruting is coming along there are going to be some gloomy days ahead for the town of Columbus! HAIL TO THE VICTORS

    3. @michrecr if you look back at Meyer's classes he assembled in Gainesville and this one in Ohio they are VERY top heavy. He tends to put the majority of his eggs in just a few baskets and go for the homeruns. I remember one year clearly where he had Knowshon Moreno very interested, but went all in after CJ Spiller and ended up losing them both. Moral of the story is I think Hoke and Meyer recruit similar to their personalities. Hoke is more conservative and may not sell out the same way as Meyer will for one recruit. He would rather have top to bottom depth quality than a very top heavy class. I am not saying Meyer is wrong, but I think he has a different philosophy than Hoke. It sounded like Diggs early on was very interested in Michigan, but due to academics, behavior, and/or likelihood of landing him he wasn't worth the time and resources it would cost the rest of the staff and this class.

    1. Wolverines123....Michrecr is not a tool. He's a fan with a different POV than you have. 75% of Buckeye fans are tools!!!! I don't know what the 2010s have in store for Michigan. I think we'll have some good years but we may/or may not have a battle on our hands with Meyer. He's proven that he can win and that is scary but our coach has proven that he can win too. The coming years should be fun and I'm not sure either school will dominate. We need to drop the Maize and Blue coloured goggles and understand that our trip "Back" is just starting. We may not go 11-2 this year but that's okay too. I don't know if you got to every game last year but even when we won, we didn't always look great but we never gave up. Good teams find a way to win even when they suck and we proved it a couple of times last year. Let's each have our opinions and respect each others. I'm guessing 9 and 3 next year but I hope that all of you 11-1 or 12-0 guys are right.

By my count and this is really just a guess UM will have around 23 scholarships for 2013. How close am I to UM needs for 2013?
2 Qbs one is Shane Morris
    2 Rbs
3-4 WRs Tall and fast would be great.
5-6 O linemen. Would love to take 6 with 4 o linemen graduating.
    2 DEs
    1 NT
    2 LB
    1 S
2 CBs Tall and fast again.
2 To fill in where hole are.
What do you think of this list?

Sidenote: ESPNs Andre Ware and Tom Luginbill said on College football live that it's not about team rankings. It's about filling team needs and getting kids that fit your system. Thats what UM did.

    2. I think as of right now we will have 67 scholarship players, leaving only 18. I am sure there will be some attrition and with Isaiah Bell and Mike Jones being RS Srs. they may not get their 5th year if they have graduated. We will lose some, but I think the number right now is only 18. @Jer89 you may be right on at 23 when all is said and done. BTW, the BIG does allow an additional 3 over the 85 scholarship limit, so that number could rise to 88.

    4. Caleb the maximum is 85 total and 25 per year. The B1G allows schools to recruit up to 28 per year but you still can't exceed the NCAA imposed limit of 85.

      Delete
    5. There are only 16 seniors (true and redshirt) leaving after 2012 season. So, we start with a class of sixteen and await any transfers or medical hardships between now and NSD of next year to get how many we can sign.

Hopkins might transfer because he isn't getting to run the ball anymore (because he can't hold on to the rock). I can also see Antonio Poole transferring if he doesn't move up the LB depth chart after spring ball. Same with Paskorz, Wilkins and Ash on the d-line. As said by Caleb, MJones and Bell are non-senior upperclassmen who really don't play and could leave the team. Maybe Justice Hayes leaves if he doesn't see any playing time in his future behind Fitz or Rawls. I wouldn't be surprised to see either Rawls or Hayes leave to a MAC school just to have a better career, but I can see both staying, too, and being the 2nd and 3rd option for two years once VSmith graduates.

I would hope and think Hoke won't pressure anyone to leave just so that we can sign more than sixteen. There more than likely will be a few leave, and they could come from this incoming class (a la Chris Barnett, Kellen Jones, Greg Brown from 2011).

    6. @ GoBlueNorth The "Maximum" is 85, but there is an exception for to add three more! Read below from an article in Sports Illustrated,

"The Big Ten has no issue with oversigning because it banned the practice in 1956. The conference actually loosened its rule in 2002 to allow schools to oversign by three players, but even that rule is drastically different from the NCAA rule now in effect. According to Big Ten associate commissioner Chad Hawley, schools are allowed three over the 85-man limit, not the annual 25-man limit. If, for example, Michigan ends a season with 20 open scholarship spots, then Michigan may sign 23 players. No more."

Most people assume the Big Ten is operating the same as the SEC and we aren't.

    7. Yes and No. They can have 88 names signed after NSD but by August they have to be down to 85 and report back to the Conference how they came into compliance.....they can't just say we cut these three kids because they were the worst players. They have to come in at 85 with legitimate reason for getting rid of kids (medical, transfers, academics, etc). It's a very shitty practice to become involved in because you are banking on three of your kids failing somehow. That's an NCAA ceiling and the only schools that I thought were allowed to exceed it were the Military Academies.

  53. Just read an article that we offered a kid out of ohio named Jaron Dukes. He is 6"4.5 200 pnds. Kid grew up rooting for Michigan and is excited about the offer. I hope he jumps on board be great to have a kid with that kind of size on the team. Plus seems like he wants to be a Michigan man type of kid we want.

Here is his profile on Scout http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=5977625 This is for 2013 by the way

  54. Finally watched Willie Henry's film and all I can say is WOW. I think this kid will go from 3 star prospect to first round draft pick after 4 years with Mattison, Hoke and Montgomery. That boy can flat out play football.

  55. Didn't mention it but he is a WR. That is why I liked his size doesn't say what his 40 time is though. But he is up there with top tier WR's for next year I also like Ateman because of his size.

  57. Anyone see or hear anything on what's going on with Kozen. Has he said when he plans on making his final decision and sending in his LOI? Michigan could still use the help on the interior of the Oline.

  59. When it comes to the Michigan and Ohio rivalry, Meyer is what it needed. No more decades of dominance, but back and forth, what a great rivalry is made of. I'm excited, we'll beat Meyer, and he'll beat us, but it will be the best rivalry once again in college football, recognized by the national audience as well. GO BLUE!!!

  65. He's still MIA. Word now out that UM's chances with Diamond are fading. He decides tomorrow at 7pm central - Chicago time. I believe if we whiff on him, Kozan then becomes a great possibility.

Damn it - whiff out on Garnett & Diamond 2 five stars on scout. - That will definitely suck. - Scout still has him to UM & so do most on espn who. Whatever happens , happens. The mistery ends this weekend with Diamond & Kozaz,..then onto 2013...

  66. Come on lets get something new up here about...well anything. Diamond, Kozan, and possible 2013 commits. Just wish I didn't have to get on here for 5 days sometimes before I here anything new. JUst give us something to talk about. I don't mind it when there is nothing to talk about, but when I keep hearing people talk about things on here and read thingsa at other sites I just think it would be nice to get some inside information on it. Even if it is just Benji's opinion. This is litterally the only place I go for my info because I feel I can trust the information and I love Benji. The guy is amazing. Just wanna see more postings than we have been getting lately thats all.

  67. o/k boss dog. That's the word on the 247 sports board posted by Steve Wiltfong - the Wisconsin Board Insider is hush hush. Scout's updated commitment tracker still has Diamond to Michigan.

Now if that does not work for you by me relaying some type of info,..oh well. Then check back tomorrow I guess after 7pm when all hell breaks out.... Any other thign you want to chime on ...?

  68. I agree when u have over 110 comments on a post there shood be something someone said we could talk about.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yeah thats all I'm saying. I like it when Benji does his thing and shoots us a post about something we didn't know about or even when he just tells us what he thinks because I value his opinions a lot. That is a big reason I get on here. Just seems like a lot has gone on in the last 24+ hours.

  70. Maize,
Benji is busy with school. He had exam lately that's why he has not posting as much lately. I am sure him and Davon are resting from yesterday and Benji in 12 hours ahead of us.

  71. This is not new but how does everyone feel about the 4 year scholarships versus the 1 year ones that were offered previously?

I personally like the 4 year scholarships. Michigan has always stood by their obligations to do what is best for their recruits others have not. Hopefully this will bring an end to the current over signing trend that has gone on in some conferences.

    1. I like it a lot. It shows a kid that the school is in it for 4 years too. I wish other conferences would do this. Honeslty I hope it helps the Big Ten compete for recruits more

  81. The four-star offensive lineman was rated as the No. 5 prospect in the state of Colorado and the No. 12 prospect at the offensive guard position. If he chose Auburn, Kozan would join fellow freshman Shane Callahan, an offensive tackle from Chaparral HS in Parker, CO, on the Tigers offensive line.
