Je'Ron Stokes next to leave

When it was first put out there that Michigan would take a class of 26, many were skeptical about how 8 new spaces would free up in the class (early predictions gave UM 18 scholies). But the annual attrition that we've become used to over the last 3 years has struck again and claimed Tony Posada and Je'Ron Stokes this week, and it might rear it's head again in the next few days.

I discussed Posada's departure yesterday, so now let's look at Stokes. Firstly, we have to be disappointed that a guy with so much hype coming to the team has failed to live up to it. But then we have to consider how weak the depth chart is looking at WR next year!

Michigan will now almost certainly take two WRs with the four remaining spots, unless they opt for Ron Thompson and move Devin Funchess to WR, which is a viable option in my opinion if they can't get the right WRs.

Anyway, this means another change to the projected class!

The focus on the class is now fully offensive, so out goes Dan O'Brien and in comes Jordan Payton for the first time! Amara Darboh is still the other receiver, and Jordan Diamond is in as the 6th OL. I'm keeping Brionte Dunn in there too.

  1. Is it safe to say Garnet will commit before Diamond? (Very high on Academics and has us in his final without a visit). Payton/Darboh/Madaris safe to say at least 2?? Leaving Diamond, Wright, Dunn, Banner (Am I missing someone?). I'm sorry, but we can't leave Yuri Wright - he's too good of an athlete and I see him not redshirting. Then again what do I know, just a civilian.

  2. Benji,
Are you sure you want to keep Diamond in there? There is way to many rumors out there about him and his mother.

I would like to see Banner, Garnett, Payton and Darboh. If they find another spot Wright. I think by the time the NCAA makes a decison on OSU the class will be full so Dunn will not make it.

  3. Hi Benji, you know despite your point about focusing on Offensive Players now, I would still like to get O'brien in this class, you got to have big bodied able guys to be able to rotate at DT. These guys need a breather throughout a hard fought game.

I would like 2 WR's now that Stokes has packed it in. I don't see how that guy was rated a 4 Star in High School, seems he was over rated.

Another OL is essential now and any other depth building commit at whatever position will be fine with me.

  4. Diamond was recently quoted and was very clear: He will not decide, nor allow his recruitment to be a distraction, until after his Senior season.

He was quoted as saying, along the lines of: I will have loyalty and respect for the coaches that stick by me until I make my decision.

Whatever your views on him, and the rumors about his selection process and contenders, I don't think there will be a slot for him that late in the process. Unless, of course, the coaches are so sold on him, that they will pass on someone else.

I mean, look at what happened with Schutt. That was a hell of kid to say "no thanks."

As usual, all speculation. No one knows how much the kid is loved, or long they will wait for him. My gut tells me that the coaches would rather take a kid dying to play for Michigan, rather than a kid who seems to be holding so many programs on equal footing.

Maybe that's what happened to Schutt. When he chose ND first, and was denied, Michigan lost interest. Who knows?

  5. I completely agree. Hate to say it, but its a waste of time. Hoke and Co. means business. I think what the problem is that the staff did not expect recruiting to take off like this. I have never seen Michigan recruiting like this in my 15-20 years of following UM Football. Love the name "Diamond" though.

    ReplyDelete
  6. As many people as are calling for Dunn, I don't believe he should be a priority for the class. Darboh, Payton, Garnett, and the first commit of Wright or Banner. (The BBall fan in me wants Banner.)

    ReplyDelete
  7. Yes sir. Only concern is that he he mobile enough to fit in UM Basketball scheme. I'm assuming he is since they spoke with him. I'm wondering if they have a scholly left; if so, he can use that instead of football giving us a freeby. Is that even possible?

    ReplyDelete
  8. $20 says that Diamond waits too long, Garnett commits and it's bye bye Diamond. I'd be fine with that, we need another true guard in this class.

Then at least two weapons, Payton and Darboh seem good. We don't have a snowballs chance in hell with Banner, he's staying in The Pac. We should get Wright though. I think the coaches are skeptical of T-Rich as a shut down corner and they surely want one of those. I think taking Dunn for the sake of securing his cousin is a mistake, if he commits, great, if not there are other options. but we need some weapons.

    ReplyDelete
  9. LS2 is right the priority is linemen and WR. Besides next year the coaches will just need to line up Lewan,Omameh,Kalis,Magnuson,Braden,Bar and a possible linemen later in front of top rated RB's. If that amount of beef does not make you want to sign on the spot you don't want to play big time football.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Also, I think Diamond is out for Michigan, his family seems to perceive the coaching staff loading up at Tackle as a slight against him. Same with T-rich, I think if we land Wright, T-Rich is out. I think that's okay, I can't remember the last time a guy his size actually turned out to be a shut down corner in D-1 correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not an NCAA historian.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I think TRich will stay AND we are in play for Wright. Too much peer pressure for him to go. I like Garnett and Banner, but I think they'll both go elsewhere. Diamond is taking tons of visits, but if he committed early a la TRich he couldn't take his visits. He still can and when those last spots are available he can jump in at the last minute because we may only be targeting 3-4 elite OL (Peat, Garnett, Diamond and Banner) at that point.

I am not so sure that Dunn hasn't told the staff that he is in and is just staying low key for fear of being treated like Kalis has been. An OSU commit that has the stones to come to the UM BBQ is pretty ballsy! He may be in already and we just don't know it.

WR - 100% Go get Darboh! Payton is going to be a star, but appears to me more like a possession-type similar to Marquise Walker. He dosen't appear to have that elite speed to be a Braylon Edwards-type.

As far as people thinking we shouldn't highly prioritize Yuri Wright, I think they should re-think their logic. This kid would be the consensus top recruit in our class and would more than likely be entrenched as a starter the day he walked on to campus. Excellent size and amazing ball skills. If top tier talent wanted to come we would be foolish to turn them away because we are "already full." (BTW, Schutt is not "elite" IMO). If Mario Edwards, Noah Spence or YURI WRIGHT tells the staff that he has legitimate interest Hoke will find a way to get a playmaker of this caliber in over a second receiver or 7th OL.

  12. I see it the same way, Paul. And I'll add what I've posted in the past: Cass has had two corners in the news in past few years. And the stories were not about their football success. Maybe TR is cut from a different mold but...

As for his size, maybe he's not done yet. Or, maybe the 5'9" is phony, like so many stats, and he's 5'8". Or maybe he is that rare 5'9" kid that plays so much taller.

Unfortunately, I vividly remember Boo Boo trying to cover Floyd in the Army AA game. All that speed and vertical jump ability meant absolutely nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not sure if anybody has mentioned it already, but...

Mike Shaw is the starting running back!

That is, if the season were to start today...

    ESPN Insider tells us...

UPDATE: The senior has stepped up and Michigan head coach Brady Hoke has given running back Mike Shaw a vote of confidence. Hoke told Angelique Chengelis of the Detroit News that Mike Shaw would be the starting back if the season began today.

"I think he's been more consistent on a daily basis," Hoke said. "That's what he really shows the most and I think he's improved a little bit."

    ReplyDelete
  14. UM would take Wright if he wanted to Go Blue because also plays S.

Hoke is loyal to the seniors so it is no surprise Shaw will get the start for now.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Shaw has enough experience to know his head from his ass in the huddle, at the snap, and through the whistle.

It's not exactly a wild guess on my part, but I would bet my last dollar that pass blocking ability/ability to pick up the blitz was and is the difference maker.

In this scenario, with no clear outlier, that is almost always the case. I would even further venture to guess that he is not even thetop runner. He's the top choice, because he brings a sum of his parts that exceeds his competitors.

All do respect, Jer, being a Senior meant nothing in the decision, in and of itself, that is...

    ReplyDelete
  16. I think that him being a senior MAY have had something to do with it. But mainly that he has the ability to be a good RB, his skills are there. I think if his skills were the same as an underclassman, he would get the nod, because he's a senior, and maybe thats the case.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hoke is only looking at Shaw and Tossiant at RB if they are running neck and neck the senior going to get the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  18. You simply cannot preach about how the best player will play, and then favor someone simply because he's an upper classman. If ALL else is equal, you can obviously choose based on seniority. Otherwise, the grumbling about hypocritical coaching begins.

Shaw was chosen because he knows when, where, and how he needs to lay down a block. That's what separated him from the pack. Consistency of performance on every play. If Shaw was a Junior, he'd still be the starter.

Upper classman have experience. Experience means something. But, being a Junior or Senior means nothing, if there is someone behind you who can bring what is needed. That's why a walk on might start at DT, instead of Alex Schwab.

    ReplyDelete
  19. If I had my pick I would take Payton, Darboh, Dunn, and Wright. In this class alone we already have 5 offensive linemen committed and 6 defensive linemen. That is plenty linemen for one recruiting class. I would take a stud running back and a stud corner back over adding more depth to a line. Dunn is also big because it might wrap up the recruitment of Dymonte Thomas. Overall here is the rankings of the players I most want to add to our already outstanding class.

    1. Payton
    2. Darboh
    3. Wright
    4. Dunn
    5. Garnett
    6. O'brien
    7. Diamond

    ReplyDelete
  20. Much earlier in the conversation it was asked wether Banner would take up as bball scholarship. I believe that he would take the football scholarship and be considered a "walk on". As for the CB situation, Wright and Richardson would complement each other very well. Wright would shut down his man, our amazing DL will create pressure forcing a quick throw, and TR will be waiting on the rushed throw and get an INT. Richardson is not a shut down corner, he is a ball hawk. He will fit perfectly. In this class we need at least one more OL and two WRs. The coaches seem confident in the DTs, so we don't need another one.

  24. Looks like one more attrition is on the way. Stay tuned for Chris Barnett. . .

    ReplyDelete
  25. Freshman TE Chris Barnett has left the team too. He came in to camp grosely overweight and he probably got run into the ground.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Michigan Just lost another player. Freshmen TE Chris Barnett is leaving. We are short at TE now wonder if we end up taking Ron Thompson.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The way that he flip flopped with his commitment you just knew this would happen eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  28. 1. Darboh
    2. Payton
    3. Garnett
    4. Wright
    5. Thompson
***(Wishful thinking) DGB, Diggs, Peat, Banner***
    Unsure about Diamond

    ReplyDelete
  29. Cass I like the picks.. maybe throw an Obrien in there? I think we could land DGB if u send the dogs and throw everything at him. Make him a priority and sell him with offering the #1 jersey.

    ReplyDelete
  30. O'Brien dominated @ camps. But I think he goes to TN. TN has been dipping in Michigan with success. And much oblige BTW. The only concern about DGB, is that it appears the staff doesn't seem like they recruit hard unless the athlete seems interested. But we will see. If anything, I would put the load on Devin Gardner/Shane Morris to get in DGB ear. All in due time.

    ReplyDelete
  31. TE transfer... Check. Surprised it took this long.

Ron Thompson has always had an offer for a reason. He could potentially play TE or WR. Personally, I'd like to see him at WR.

Short at TE? Hardly. Funchess, Williams and potentially, Pharoah Brown are still on board for 2012. And, I count SEVEN on the current roster.

That's why I am surprised it took this long. Barnett was not even in the top 5. That, and probably being homesick, has made him reconsider Arkansas, and maybe even Colorado. (My guess).

    ReplyDelete
  32. I see now Barnett has left. Do these freshmen have to sit out a year before playing somewhere else?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Unless they transfer to Div-II

    ReplyDelete
  34. If he enrolled/attended classes, he has to sit out for a year. (My understanding is that the only way a kid with a signed LOI can leave and not sit out, is if he does not enroll AND is released from his LOI.)

I'm not sure if he enrolled, but the freep reported a quote a long time ago that all 2011 recruits had cleared and enrolled. I have no idea if that was accurate, as there have been reports that Jones is eligible to not only join the team, but play for OK this year.

  35. Hey everybody. U of M alum and first time poster here. Has anyone heard any rumors that Kyle Kalis is second guessing his commitment? I saw something on Rivals this morning but wasn't able to read the full article.

    ReplyDelete
  36. He's been trashed online by Ohians. He and Strobel pretty much stated they will be roomies. Good friends with Wormley. And the key word you said is "rumors". Since your an alum from my dream school, I'll let you use your brains and decide.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Speaking of Kalis, thats a bad ass name. Hope his middle name doesn't begin with the letter "K". Then we would have a problem.

    ReplyDelete
  38. What's up with 3 in one week? Weeding out the week? I'm not worried but confused. Freeing up scollies?

  40. Kalis, last month:

“The basic reaction (to my commitment) in Ohio has been, ‘Ah, how could you do this to your home state?! You betrayed your home state!!'” texted Kalis, whom Scout ranks the country’s sixth-best offensive tackle and the top overall player in Ohio. “It just makes me laugh because I’ve only been here for 2 1/2 years."

  41. The author of the Rivals article tweeted this "U-M pledge Kyle Kalis laughed off rumors that he's wavering on his commitment, said "not at all" when asked if he's waffling.

    ReplyDelete
  42. More:

During that visit, Kalis called Hoke from the block "M" at Michigan Stadium’s 50-yard line to say he would be coming to Ann Arbor.

“The thing about Coach Hoke that really sticks out to me is that he’s real,” Kalis texted. “What you see is what you get with Coach, and that’s how it should be.

“Coach Hoke will be the reason U of M gets back on top. And I’m not the only one who sees it that way, the whole class does and the amount of focus that we all have is incredible, and Coach Hoke instilled that in us.”

  47. as of right now does anyone know how many free scholies we have

    ReplyDelete
  48. Thats to bad about Barnett. I had high hopes for him. Wish him luck in life.

As for Washington never really thought he was going blue anyway. I did think he would in up at Kentucky instead. Never thought DGB was high on UM either but when Morris hits campus UM will get there DGB.

    ReplyDelete
  49. 24 open scholarships, and we have two people who might not get a fifth year. I see us loosing 1-3 more players to transfers. Rumors have been circling abou isiah bell, we could loose a RB that doesn't get much playing time, and/or Gibbons if wile takes over all kicking duties.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Washington? Rats!

I was really hoping for 5 DE recruits in 2012. Just because it's never been done before.

I wish him the best of luck, as I do his head coach, whomever that may be.....

I hope Stanford goes with him. More than sick of hearing about those two.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I don't think anyone is going to give Gibbons a scholarship, and Michigan certainly won't pull his. That kid better keep working.. in the classroom. He does not appear to have a future as a kicker in college, and has no business chasing an NFL pipe dream.

I would hate to see him lose the chance to graduate with a degree from Michigan, in a futile pursuit, trying to turn some heads kicking for Chico State.

    ReplyDelete
  52. @ cassbmw

thank god for Michigan medical marihuana huh? Lol

I just can't believe with the lack of depth at TE, he leaves. I can see stokes, who wasn't to solid on playing time before or now. Or posada with major position compitition...but why barnett? Not the right "Michigan man" or what? I dont buy home sick!! Can't leave home for four years? Doubt it..

    ReplyDelete
  53. LoL. . . Harsh, but I like. Let him get his degree. I wonder if there is a B1G All-American water boy team?

    ReplyDelete
  54. Blue,
I have to agree with you on the Washington Stanford drama. There is a couple of other player I am alittle tired of hearing about.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Future transfers?

I see a guy like DT Richard Ash moving on. If he can't crack it now, he might never.

LB Antonio Poole may see Clark succeeding, and an incoming pool of guys getting ready to leap frog him. As for RB, can you ever keep the stable happy? The two new FR are getting too many compliments. I see someone leaving for some carries elsewhere.

Also, there are a lot of young CB's on the roster. If Michigan takes 2 in 2012, I expect at least one to leave.

And that's not counting medicals, 5th years not renewed, and guys that otherwise have had enough. 2012 may get to 28.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I am also tired of hearing about the Sooners and Longhorns on ESPN.ESPN is starting to sound like CBS when all they can talk about in Bama,Gators and Tiger.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Barnett did more switches in a year then most guys changing their draws in a year. Not implying, just sayin. . .

    ReplyDelete
  58. Smokey, no telling.

People forget he had a knee injury in his Senior year. Maybe he tried to come out, but realized he's done. Or. maybe he's just a head case.

I agree, if he had the stuff, a kid could not ask for a better shot than he had. Koger is a great, team, kid. He would have helped groom him. And, most opportunity programs for TE's already have a pipeline set. It's only because of the transition from munchkin mania that Michigan has a hole to fill.

I wonder if he was Kellen Jones roommate.......

    ReplyDelete
  59. Cass,

I hope I never sit next to you on an airplane, because I don't remember him changing quite that much....

  61. **Grins @ Blue**;THC count lowers when baked @ certain degree. Jokes aside, I had high hopes for Barnett. Keep in mind he's good friends with Zeke, the other head case

    ReplyDelete
  62. Now Washington has not committed. Who knows? Really don't care for him.

    ReplyDelete
  63. That's what the magic sprinkles are for...

Did not know about the Zeke connection.

I had high hopes, too. The kid seemed to have some real potential, as his offer list seemed to indicate.

I will be curious to see if they play Pharaoh Brown at TE. I know they have told him D, but the kids got too much freakish ability to not at least think about it.

    ReplyDelete
  64. ESPN Kirk Herbstreit is smoking something. He says OSU will play Iowa for the B1G Championship. Thats smoking something.

    ReplyDelete
  65. He must have a reunion, or something, coming up over the Labor Day weekend.....

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think Brown will stay @ DE. Can not recall where I saw the article. But from my vague memory, Hoke/Greg liked him @ DL because he has room to grow and his toughness. And also @ one of the camps, he excelled @ the WR position. Doesn't have DGB speed, but very good speed for his size. AJ Williams is under-rated @ TE. Reports has it that he is very athletic for a big man to the point that if he adds weight, he'll be a OT prospect.

    ReplyDelete

  68. PB is playing DE and TE this year (moved from QB. He originally told everyone he preferred to to play O, but changed his tune later.

If he breaks out and really puts on a show at TE all year, it will be difficult to keep him on the shelf until he beefs up enough to play DE.

I hope that this sways RT to join up. But, He's starting to wear on me like Diamond, Washington and Stanford...

    ReplyDelete
  69. Is Thompson back in play for UM now that Barnett is gone.

    ReplyDelete
  70. RT has an offer on the table. One of 177, at last count, MI has outstanding.

  71. I missed the Sam Webb article on O'Brien today:
    http://detnews.com/article/20110825/OPINION03/108250448

He basically said that he has an open offer from Hoke, valid any time he decides. Sounds like it was reaffirmed recently, since the BBQ and after Pipkins committed. The last part is my speculation based on the fact that he was quoted as telling TomV that he was going to call the MI coaches after Pipkin announced, to see where things stand.

I bet they love the kid, think they have him, and that's why they schutt the door on Schutt.

    ReplyDelete
  72. With barnett out, I'm not worried about TE, but I've always liked Ron Thompson.

I really don't see any of our Running backs leaving. The freshman are getting praise, Fitz and Hopkins are only sophomores, Shaw has the staring job, and if Cox leaves, he wont play anywhere because he'll have to skip a year, and then he wouldn't get to play at the new school because he'd graduate, and already used his RS.

    No way Kalis leaves Michigan.

Although I am enthused about LB competition, I think Poole will surprise people and be a standout when his time comes. He impressed a lot of people at all the camps and stuff before, many people ranked him higher than previously before. He's got good size and he's smart. I think he'll be more of a run stopper than a coverage lb, which I think Clark is the opposite. But with RJS, Ross, and Bolden coming in, I'm EXTREMELY excited for LB competition. That is, as long as nobody takes the spotlight away from my boy Cam Gordon!

The coaches are saying we'll probably see a bit of Devin Garnder this year, at least early on. Not because Drob is losing his spot, but just to give Gardner some playing time, because they really like him in their offensive schemes. If he performs well, him and Morris will be able to recruit the DGB's of the next couple classes. I just hope Roundtree sticks around for his senior year. I honestly think Stonum, provided he is still on the team for next season, will be a fantastic player. He's got great speed, he's 6'2, closing in on 200 lbs, and he can make the "spectacular" catch's, and he has the opportunity to become one of UM's best return men.

I think I'm a fan of having all three of our DB's on the field. Floyd and Avery at corner with Woolfolk at safety. I like swapping Kovacs and Carvin Johnson at the strong safety spot. Johnson for coverage, and kovacs to stop the run. Watch out though, I think a couple freshman will try to battle for corner playing time, and could get it. Raymon Taylor and Blake Countess are on my watch list for playing time this year. They may not take over the starting jobs, but could play in 3rd and long scenario's when we want an extra DB on the field.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Also, Tristan Nickleson is one of the top rated OT for 2013. He has interest in a lot of big schools, including Michigan (his top three are Michigan, LSU and TAMU, in that order). One thing that stands out however, is that his father said he wants... "the combination would be a top-25 football program with has a top-tier engineering school". Well, Michigan is ranked 2nd in the country for mechanical engineering, and the other schools aren't even in the top 10, so it's looking good!

  74. WIth all due respect to 247Sports, I haven't seen any of the major recruiting sites say Washington has committed to Ohio. This is currently on Rivals.com:

"Cincinnati (Ohio) Taft defensive end Adolphus Washington told Rivals.com Thursday afternoon that, although Ohio State is his leader, a decision is not imminent and he is still open to each of his finalists, a list that consists of Alabama, Cincinnati, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State."

He has a Live Chat with Rivals.com at 8pm scheduled for tonight. Stanford also mentioned in the last day or two that he is still in play for Michigan. I do think because UM has SO many recruits already many of us including me are too quick to call some of these guys "divas" or say there is "too much drama." No offense to anyone that comments here, but if this were any other year, when we would only have 10-12 verbals, these guys (Diamond, Washnigton, Stanford, etc) would be given a lot more love by us fans than we are giving them. Washington and Stanford didn't hardly make any visits to campuses or camps this summer due to a very busy AAU circuit in which their team went to Orlando for nationals. These guys are doing the same thing many other UM recruits do every year because they were at some point heavy leans early it doesn't mean they aren't still potentially. Benji is still on the Diamond bandwagon and I know we all respect his insight. In time these guys will go where it is best for them. I would still rather have Standford than either Payton or Darboh, but he hasn't had the time (or made the time) to visit. If he gets on campus Hoke will lock him down. Ok, I'm done.

    ReplyDelete
  75. What does anybody think about Josh Furman playing some WR? He's listed as a safety, but that spot is pretty locked up right now, and we could use some help at WR IMO. We lose our tall man (stonum) at 6'2. Furman is 6'2 210 lbs, and is an athletic beast, he runs the 40 in 4.36 seconds. Safety is the one major D position that could play WR. The size and speed combo are very similar to both positions.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Caleb,

Posts like yours are really why I love to read on all sites, not just football.

"No offense to anyone that comments here, but if this were any other year, when we would only have 10-12 verbals, these guys (Diamond, Washnigton, Stanford, etc) would be given a lot more love by us fans than we are giving them."

    That says it all!

You are not only exactly correct, but you opened my eyes to my own faulty bias and unfounded opinions.

I'm going to reverse course and start showing love to anyone considering Michigan, as long as I think they would be good for the team.

Thank you very much for the much needed reality check.

The world of 5 star QB's committing and 5 star LT's from Houston showing incredibly strong interest over a year early is not exactly the real world.

The Army AA game, and NSD will always be always be dates when highly coveted prospects announce, and I for one, need to learn to be realisticly patient.

  77. well I have to be honest with you buddy, I was one of those skepticals you mentioned at the beginning, but after some research and watching some games and of course after reading your posts and a price per head blog, I do believe in what you said, sorry I doubted you
