Brionte Dunn - What lies ahead

The recruitment of Brionte Dunn has been a wild one already, but there's still so much to come in this saga. He's already spoke with Urban Meyer, and was impressed with what the coach told him, but there are still many issues to sort out.

Today, Sam Webb of scout.com tweeted that Michigan coaches were having an in home visit with Dunn today, and this is very important for the Wolverines. Brionte's mom didn't make either of the visits to Ann Arbor this month, so it's vital that she talks to the coaches today and gets an idea of what Michigan is all about. UM running back coach Fred Jackson will be there, and he's a very experienced recruiter, hopefully he can work some magic. Ohio State coaches will also be visiting him in the coming weeks.

Next on the list of issues facing Dunn will be the position of offensive coordinator at Ohio State. Urban Meyer has been known for running a spread attack at Florida, and with a talent like Braxton Miller already in Columbus, he'd be a fool not to run some kind of spread option offense, in my opinion. Dunn is more of a power back, so if Meyer brings in a spread guru or just anyone who hasn't run much from under center before, this could be a big advantage to Michigan, as we're moving towards a traditional power I running game.

Then we have the all important official visits. It'll likely just be one to each school; I don't see any other schools coming into the conversation. He visited Penn State this fall, but they've since had problems; to say the least. The official to Michigan should give his parents a chance to see the clearly superior academics (!!!) as well as an opportunity to speak in depth with Coach Hoke and offensive coordinator, Al Borges. He should be accompanied by good friend Kyle Kalis on this visit, and maybe Dymonte Thomas will go along too (just a guess there), which would aid Michigan.

My real worry is around his official visit to Ohio State. The guy has grown up as an Ohio State Buckeye, and no matter how bad things get, you'll always have that desire to play for your childhood favorite. He probably knows a lot of the players, and he's also got the pressure of the state wanting him to attend OSU, which can be a powerful thing.

Lastly, we have the NCAA sanctions against Ohio State, which are expected to be announced in mid December. Originally these were pretty important in his recruitment, as something like a bowl ban would have been a significant factor. But sadly, it looks like OSU will just get a slap on the wrist from the NCAA, and probably won't face any additional sanctions.

All of these events will have taken place by christmas time, so expect a decision to be made around then, maybe earlier if he can schedule his official visits quickly.

  1. If this kid hasnt committed to Blue by now, I dont think he's going to. Borges had Cadilac and Ronnie Brown, Hoke had Fitz rush over a thousand yards his first year there, and is going to the pro style, Jackson had repeatedly pumped out NFL RB's year after year, his cousin is going to UM, the academics are better, yet Meyer has never had an NFL running back, never had a thousand yard back, is a spread coach, and might face santions, yet he still doesn't know? He's just looking and waiting for a reason to be a Bucknut, That's all he's doing

  2. That last bit, "He's just looking and waiting for a reason to be a Bucknut" - that might be spot on. In fact, it's kind of felt that way for a long time, but the question remains, will he find the right reason? Or does Michigan make more sense for him career wise, i.e follow head over heart?

  5. February 1st can't come fast enough. Tough choice ahead for this kid. College is different than the NFL. If any of these kids ever get to the next level, they don't really care who drafts them. They could be Packer fans their whole life but if they get drafted by Detroit.....they don't care. College is different. They get a choice (if they're talented and lucky). Bri'onte has to choose between what he has likely wanted his whole life and what right now is probably the right thing to do (which also happens to be the biggest rival of his dream). I'd love to have him but more than that I hope he does what feels right. Best wishes either way for this kid.

PS I can't believe the trash talk from some Buckeye fans while this kid is still on their board.

  8. Bad news guys and gals

I just finished checking Bucknuts and apparently Meyer is going to land every top recruit still out there.

He is getting a great deal of attention on the recruiting front and is reaching out to the likes of Spence and Diamond while reaffirming with Dunn.

As a parent.....honestly, I just don't get it. I look at and listen to this guy and I wouldn't want him in my kids life for 4 years. He a good coach who does well with good players but there's something about him. I think he's not at all unlike Tressel and it won't be long before the NCAA is back in Columbus. When that happens, tSIO will be repeat offenders and will be dealt with accordingly......Oh wait, they already are and.......Nuff said!!!

  9. Who cares about Urban Meyer. He isn't a beast on the recruiting trail, his assistants were. He hasn't done anything coaching wise either. He took over a Utah program and inherited Alex Smith for two years. He then took over a talent stocked Florida team, who would've won National titles with any cardboard cutout you could think of. Urban Meyer is about the most overrated name out there.

  10. BTW......much sarcasm in my post. I hate this. It's like arguing with my wife in a text message. Hell, I lose those arguments too!! :(

  11. I think people are being a little dramatic to say the least. He hasn’t landed all these big recruits yet. Just because an ohio state site says that they are your getting worried. Anyways its ohio state they are going to get big recruits no matter who the coaches is. Can we please stop worrying about ohio state and start worrying about Michigan. Last time I checked scouts website we had the #1 class in the country. They should be worried about us.

  13. Washington visited with Zach Banner on Tuesday. USC will visit on Thursday and Michigan on Friday. Banner said at least a dozen other schools have contacted Lakes football coach Dave Miller for a last-ditch effort to sway his decision. Banner confirmed he’s down to five schools — Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC and Washington.

  14. This takes that narrative about "high school recruits being indecisive" to a new level. Late last night, Stefon Diggs, a five-star wide receiver out of nearby Good Counsel, cut his list to eight schools: Auburn, California, Florida, Michigan, Oklahoma, USC,Virginia, and, yes, Maryland.

It was quite the uphill battle for the Terrapins, and often local kids like him will list the local school out of respect, either for the institution or their family members who want them to stay home. But hey, at least Maryland was in the conversation.

At least, they were for a night. Because this morning, about 12 hours after Diggs had cut his list, he made a change: he cut Maryland and added Virginia Tech in its place.

    Fun.

  15. Got my back Jer89. Thanks. Recruiting is slow right now all we have is friendly banter. Maybe we should plan a NSD early morning beer drinking event in the Detroit area for anybody who is close by. )1 Feb 12 at the Anchor on Fort???

On a serious note let's not dispel the power of Meyer. Some of these kids and their parents are easily hypnotized.

We'll still finish off with a great class but whether or not we grab all of these 4 or 5 star players remains to be seen. We will still be top 5.......I'll take it.

Benji....can you give us a list of prospective recruits and the % chance that you think we have of landing them.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Benji, you hit the nail on the head... All the objective reasons point to Michigan, but he is a young man and grew up an OSU fan. That's what it comes down to. If he believes Meyer, it will be because he chooses to. Jackson has about 5 RB that played in the NFL, and borges did it at Auburn as well... Playing style, academics, developing pro talent, a superb O-Line class, all point to Michigan... We will see how he picks. BTW, HOKE needs to be down there in his home as well!
Hoping we can close on some of these top level recruits. Cant remember the last time we were high up on so many coming down to all-star games. Too bad we couldn't offer a package deal to Banner and Garnett...

On a different note... Unfair how Michigan treated Denards cousin, Demar Dorsey... Top rated Rich Rod recruit makes academic standards, but not admitted. No reason ever given. We all knew it was due to his juvenile history. If Hoke recruited him, Michigan would have welcomed with open arms. The bad press RR was getting made this kid a target. He didn't get in, now is at a CC in Michigan and still has dreams of playing for Michigan. They usually rarely let in transfers, but should consider it, he has proven that he has grown up since he was 15... Plus he would be Michigans most athletic player, day one... faster than D rob, Stefon Diggs, or Woolfolk.

  17. I would like to see UM finish this class with Banner, Garnett, Wright, McNamara and Diggs. And this is why. You can never have to many big O linemen. It is amazing how good a RB will look when they have a hole big enough to drive a truck threw it. With Wright it would be nice to be able to rotate 3 CBs in and out. McNamara UM needs another TE just because William will move to O-line and Funchess will more then likely move to WR and he would make a good WR and thats why I would only take 1 WR in Diggs. This is how I would like the class to end. It won't but I believe you can never have enough O & D linemen. If another spot opened up I would take another DT with it. Let me know what you think?

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1. Garnett
    2. Diggs
    3. Wright
    4. McNamara
    5. Darboh

This is my top 5. Funchess will redshirt to gain some weight. Garnett is a beast and is good friends with Mags. Dunn isn't coming. McNamara is tall and has great hands for a TE and is also friends with Garnett and Mags. Countess and Mattison are going to snag Diggs. Darboh will choose us over ND. And, Payton is not on here because he is staying out West. If he was going to commit, it would have been a while ago.

Go Blue! Congrats to Coach Hoke!

  19. Jer89,

Love the list but would just love another Power back (Dunn). Would love to see us put somebody out there than can keep up with a player like Posey. I like JT but he wasn't doing it. Wright would fit the bill. Countess is also looking like a great future DB who could help out in that light.

    ReplyDelete
  20. @ Mancave
There were more issues with Dorsey than his juvenile records. Jer love the list but the coaches have stated they want 2wrs in the class.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @Jer89, that is exactly how I would like to see this class fall into place. If we had to substitute someone for Garnett or Banner I would prefer a DT over a RB. If somehow we do land those 2 along with McNamara, Wright and Diggs I would be ecstatic. We have Fitz to carry the load for 2 more years, after that I have heard a lot of people talking about Rawls, but I still have high hopes for Justice Hayes to show us what he's all about. We have 25 spots to fit a beast RB into next year. Only 5 for this year. I like our odds to grab our future work horse next year.
Go Blue! Can't wait till bowl season.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I like Ryans list! If Dunn wanted in I'd take him over Darboh and wait for next year to take 3WRs.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I have nothing against Dunn. And I think he will end up Blue. I just think UM has enough good RBs already we just need the O line to catch up. It would be nice to have a proper spring game next year. UM has a stable of RBs right now specially if Hopkins and Cox stay. Which is a big if. And UM may take 2 WRs this is my list. I just think if you move a couple of players around UM has afew good WRs.

    ReplyDelete
  24. McNamara's twitter - Wherever I go, I gotta give a s/o to the fan bases at #notredame and #michigan … Got mad respect for both schools!

    ReplyDelete
  25. There's probably only going to be about 20 spots available in the 2013 class, not 25.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You can never have enough RBs.

    ReplyDelete
  27. If you have more RBs then O-linemen on your roster. Then you have to many RBs.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Like others have said, Michigan makes the most sense for Dunn, but his heart may lie a little further south then Ann Arbor. If he wants to go Blue he would make an excellent addition, but if his heart wins out then best of luck to him. If we can get Garnett with the current O-line commits I'll be happy with Fitz, Rawls, Hayes and Drake Johnson behind them.

Urban is a great coach and will attract some speed, but give me big and physical all day and I will take my chances at the Shoe or the Big House in late November vs. Ohio.

Hoke and G.Mat will finish this out strong and keep it going, as always, Go Blue.

    ReplyDelete
  29. If any of you live in Michigan they are showing the Div. 1 championship game for Cass Tech and Catholic Central on FSD (Fox Sports Detroit) 32 on comcast

    ReplyDelete
  30. I kind of agree with Jer on Dunn. With our few remaining spots, and interest from many recruits, we should focus on the areas of utmost need. Fitz should be the man for another two years, and Rawls may emerge as the next in line. Unless the coaches are sold that Dunn is an absolute stud (which I am not yet), I think it would be better to finish with some combination of Wright, Diggs, Payton, Banner, Garnett, Diamond, McNamara.

    ReplyDelete
  31. It's nice have people agree with me for once.

    ReplyDelete
  32. If you dont get Dunn you dont get him... Fitz is a sophomore and with this Oline Talent coming in, I see Michigan Landing Ty Isaac. FUTURE MONSTER in the making. Dunn is a great Talent dont get me wrong, but you are what you are, and I think in his heart he is a buckeye.

    List.
    1.Garnett
2.Diggs (these two could flip flop, thats how good Diggs is)
    3.Wright
    4. McNamara
    5. Banner (and if Garnett didnt come, guess where Banner goes?) I guess we are visiting him on Friday.

Payton is going to go back to USC I think, and you may hear from Darboh here very soon. But Like i said Im liking this Isaac Kid.. BIG fast.. perfect for our offense. Just saying.

Two words we stopped speaking of.... Aziz Shittu

Callin it he will jump on board.

  34. I would like to talk about the NCAA sanctions for OSU. Benji talked about it in his post. I am starting to think they won't even get a slap on the wrist. In the end I would bet the NCAA only adds one more year of probation. Just think about it if OSU thought they were going to get hit with a bowl ban they would have started it this year when the best bowl they can get is the Cherry Bowl. And if you are from Michigan you should remember the Cherry Bowl. That tells me the NCAA is letting them off the hook. I can't even remember there self imposed sanctions were thats how soft they were. But what ever it is add a year of probation and thats it. What they should let is a loss of 15 scholarships over 3 years, 3 years of probation and a 3 year bowl ban. Thats what USC got right?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would take Shittu in a minute.

    ReplyDelete
  36. All this talk about RBs makes me think. How good would D Hart have been in this offence?

    ReplyDelete
  37. @ Jer... Im not really sure. He is more of a spread type back. I really dont think he would have flourished, but that is just me. Justice Hayes was Redshirted while Rawls wasnt. I see him being more like Hayes. Just my opinion though.

    ReplyDelete
  38. List: first 5 of these 6:

    1) Darboh
    2) Payton
    3) Wright
    4) Garnett
    5) Dunn
    6) McNamara

Would have loved to see Dee Hart, Jer89, even though he's a smurf. Fast smurf though. Too bad about his injury. I also think Justice Hayes might be really good, and Justice is bigger.

Dunn will play right away if he makes the right choice, which sure isn't Urbie's squad. Those guys just want to keep him because that whole fanbase would freak out if we flip one of Urbie's recruits. He would be a 1,500 yard rusher at Michigan every year with our Godzilla O-line of the future.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jer89 -

Isn't a minute a little quick to take a Shittu?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Mark- It can't be too hard....

I love Dunn. He has the potential to be an Ingram. With Morris coming, WR's and OL undoubtedly falling in line, he could be one of the cornerstones of an epic squad.

With that being said, no one really knows how good he will become. And, if he passes on Michigan, it just means that we will be in the running for a 2013 5 star, who probably would have looked elsewhere for PT.

I always fall back on the most recent glaring example: If TP had chosen Michigan, DR would have gone elsewhere.

Yost's third law: For every player selection, there is an equal and opposite selection.

  41. During Meyers tenure at Florida, 24 of his players were arrested for all kinds of things. One of those players happen to be Cam Newton, before his transfer.

I want character to be #1 at Michigan.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Y'all have to read this! Myer quit and never ended up coaching this kid. On top of that I googled the lid and he had eligibility issues this year. Can't wait to see what kinda kids um brings to tsio

    http://www.sbnation.com/2010/1/15/1252850/urban-meyer-stars-in-the-best

    ReplyDelete
  43. Character is, and will be, #1 at UM. Look at the start of this year. Star player arrested for his 2nd DUI and he is kicked off the team. Not suspended for a game, or quarter or couple of games. No, for the season and has to WORK his way back for NEXT year, not later this year. Example 2) The punter (what's his name anyway?), of all people, is suspended for a number of games for violating team rules.
At schools like OSU and MSU, those players would have played all season, ESPECIALLY with a DUI, as has been proven by MSU for YEARS (especially the last couple, Dantonio) and Urban Meyer. Come on, a guy wrencehes a QB's facemask aftger a play to purposefully cause harm, THEN punches another player. He finishes the game and only gets "suspended" for one game? Sorry, that's not class and absolutely not discipline OR character. Makes me even more proud to be a UM fan

    ReplyDelete
  44. My boss just sent this to me so ill pile on this entire urban meyer panic attack. zOMGGGGG!!!!!

With Ohio State getting a guy of Meyer’s caliber and reputation, prospects from all over the country will at least take the time to hear what he has to say.
Mark down the nation’s top cornerback and No. 19 prospect overall in Ramsey (N.J.) Don Bosco’s Yuri Wright as someone that would like to hear from Meyer. Michigan and Rutgers currently top his list.
“That’s good news,” Wright said, adding when asked if he’d be interested in the Buckeyes, “heck yeah.”

dont know where my boss got it, but he got it from somewhere

  45. I have two things to comment on. First regarding Demar Dorsey. Why on the board is it mentioned several times in the past that there was more to it than his juvenile records? No one has ever said what they were. I am not for or against this young man but if we post anything we should give the whole story not just in general facts. I hope the young man makes the most out of his life whereever his road leads him.
Second, Aziz Shittu keeps getting brought up on board. From everything I have seen he has listed us as no interest. Is there somthing I have missed?

    ReplyDelete
  46. As far as osu's sanctions, they have self-imposed a loss 5 scholarships over the next three years and two-years probation, correct? If the NCAA doesn't increase this in one or more ways it will just be absolutely ridiculous. But, based on their track-record, the NCAA really has no credibility in my book. Who expects them to put integrity over money...

    ReplyDelete
  47. MGoJake

    My take on sanctions

The killer here is that tSIO is considered a repeat offender but this is seemingly being overlooked by everybody (including the NCAA). Worst case scenario that I see for tSIO is 9 schollies over three years, 2 years of probation and if the decision is handed down before this year's bowl bids, a 1 year bowl ban (this year) and that will only be for lip service. I suspect that there's been a great deal of whispering in ears going on here. I think this is why Gee/Smith have said of course they aren't going to self impose a bowl ban........that way it lends to the appearance that they had something taken away from them (a low level bowl that they couldn't care less about).

tSIO has already been told that they will not be required to meet with the NCAA on the latest allegation of failing to monitor.

I hope that there is at least some media fallout over this when it all unfolds.

    ReplyDelete
  48. The NCAA can't start a bowl ban this year. By the time OSU finds out there punishment they will have already accepted a invite to a bowl game.

Sidenote: Rumor on twitter is that Mack Brown will retire at the end of the season. If this is true there will be a major shake up in the coaching world. If this is true look for Nick Saban, Will Muschamp, Pete carrol and a few NFL coaching names to be thrown around.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm just wondering how fast the NCAA comes down with their sanctions.....

On the 29th of November it was reported that Smith said the sanctions would be handed down in 10-14 days or the 9th to 13th of December.......you're probably right....too close the have any effect. This mess will play out as it will but agreeing with MGoJake, it should have little effect on tSIO

    ReplyDelete
  50. Sanctions probably won't effect OSU that much anyway. Look at USC, they're prob one of the 2 or 3 best non-SEC teams this year and they have sanctions. OSU will probably be affected a lil more than USC just because who wants to go to Columbus over so-Cal. Now if there was something in there about not being allowed to play on national TV in their sanctions that would be a completely different story. However, I don't know if OSU will even get that much more than they have already handed down on themselves. I hope USC sues the NCAA if OSU doesn't get at least the same punishment that USC got.

    ReplyDelete
  51. In reply to Demar Dorsey... It was his juvenile record and barely meeting academic NCAA standards. The free press chose to run like a 3 day special on bashing Rich Rod for recruiting a kid that had 2 run ins with the law when he was 15. He undoubtedly did both, but never was convicted or even charged.

The Rich Rod haters jumped on, and with the Cissoko stuff looming, U of M denied him entry into the University, but never commented on why.

He now is at Grand Rapids Community College

I don't know what other issues there could be... Stud recruit with checkered past that tried to commit at the wrong time. If Hoke recruited him the freep and message boards would praise him for giving him a chance and "coaching him up"... It's the way the world works.
