Avery Walls

Take a bow Jeff Tedford, and whoever your recruiting co-ordinator is....

The Cal Golden Bears have just received their third commitment this week from an ESPN150 defensive player; Avery Walls joins Todd Barr and Jason Gibson in what has to be one of Cal's best recruiting scalps in a long time.

Michigan was the leader back in September, but since then it all went downhill. The shocking defensive performance and the lack of certainty was more than enough to turn him away from Michigan. The December announcement was a good indicator that it wasn't going to be UM. Personally I thought he would choose the Ducks, I'm not really sure where Cal even came from?

It always sucks to lose a player who at one point during the summer was actually recruiting for you...but still, we must look forward. Wayne Lyons is the most important recruit left on the board now in my opinion, as Michigan badly needs to take a good safety. He, like all UM's targets now, will announce after the RR decision is made.

  1. Agreed. We need to secure Wayne Lyons.

  2. you can't make this stuff up with the streak michigan has had at safety. we haven't recruited or produced a blue-chip safety for over 5 years now, and that includes the last 1-2 years of the carr era. it's getting ridiculous.

  3. We have landed some decent safeties through the years, just none of them seem to work out at deep safety:

    - 06: Mouton - ESPN150 Safety, but outgrew position
    07: M Williams - ESPN150 Safety, struggled
    09: I Bell - ESPN150 Safety, now at LB
    V Emillien - 4* Safety, transferred
J Turner - 4* CB destined for S, but transferred
    10: D Dorsey - 5* Safety, Admissions failure

  4. yea sorry, that's what i meant. just none that panned out. i don't know about you, but with roughly 8 spots left, i'd seriously not mind taking 3 DT/DEs (2 DTs if Zettel comes) and 3 more safeties/CBs/potential SS. -MetsMaize

  5. It would be nice to take those positions, but you and I both know it's not going to happen ;)

I'd settle for one Safety (who can play deep safety), and one good DT. But with Darian Cooper now dropping us, even that could be hard. The problem is, its hard to focus on recruiting when you have to prepare for a game that could decide your job.
Anyway I'll probably do a post tomorrow about the ideal finish to the class, in terms of positions, so thanks for the idea!
