Recruiting Mailbag

Hey guys, just wanted to let everyone know that I will be having a recruiting mailbag today. I'll will have a mailbag every single week on Monday or Friday. You can send me your recruiting questions (football or basketball) via email: simplycomplexmm@gmail.com , over twitter: SimplyComplexMM, or just post your questions in the comments below. I'll try to answer  every question and then create a blog post with the questions and my answers. And the questions can be about 2012, 2013 or even 2014 recruiting.

EXTRA: I will be posting my first interview with a highly ranked prospect, so make sure to tune in later today!

  1. WIth the coaching change that has happened at Cal and Jordan Payton reopening his recruitment, do you believe that Coach Hoke and the staff should go after him? He was abosolutley thrilled with his visit at the Notre Dame game, but personally, I think that he will end up at Notre Dame if not Cal. How much of a chance do we really have?

  2. Nice simplycomplex!! Very good job. You and benji are going to be the dynamic duo.

Very curious about '13, expecialy WR marcell ateman. Seen alot on scout and rivals bout him and UM. Are we in the running early, or is he going to Texas? Lol they seem to dominate in state talent.

The recruiting sites seem to have us in on alot of big names next year. When do the early player ratings come out?

  3. Has David Perkins showed any interest in UofM lately? Also, is Michigan even after him at this point? If he is interested, could you see him at safety?

  4. My question is pretty short and simple: Are there any big time recruits for the 2013 class who Michigan might be the favorites for? (Obviously Shane Morris excluded since he has already given a verbal commitment)

I just can't believe how few of the top 150, or 247, or whatever number depending on who's doing the ranking, have chosen to go Blue over the past few years. I've gotten the feeling though that Hoke and Mattison might be turning that around.

  5. Gunner Kiel Went to ND. That kid changes his mind more than a girl. Hope when he throws the ball he can make his mind up better than he can choosing schools.

  6. I was asking that last question and came up with another while typing it up. How do you see the Hoke-Meyer recruiting battle going?

Meyer was able to recruit seemingly whoever he wanted down there at Florida and OSU has just as much pull up here as Florida does down there in SEC land. Not to discredit the stuff Hoke has done since he got to Ann Arbor but my concern is that Meyer is a way bigger name than Hoke and recruits might be swayed by that and whatever tricks Meyer has up his sleeve.

  7. Michigan needs to beat Meyer a couple of times, then recruits will look at Hoke and say he's the better coach, but since Hoke doesn't have the track record like Meyer he will need to make it up by winning football.games like he did this year. He also have Meyer's best recruiter and that is mattison, I'm not to worried about it. I can tell you that pipkins, Bolden, Wormley and strobes will make a stronger impact them Spence schutt and Washington, he have better teachers on the uofm staff.... go blue

  8. Ok - with some recruits nationally backing off their commitments, are there any U of M verbals we need to worry about? Things seem very stable, but you never know.

  9. Joey O'Connor has committed to OSU. I am looking forward to the battles UM and OSU will have with the linemen.

  11. SimplyComplex-

When recruiting a top receiver, like Payton, how much does an early verbal from Morris play into the staffs pitch? I know he seems very committed, but nothing is guaranteed.

  12. If UM is looking to take another WR this year does this mean Stonum will be let go?

  14. Okay, so I have been debating whether or not we need another DT in this class for months now because Will Campbell is not going to get it done next season. Ondre Pipkins is already better than Will is right now and I have him penciled in as the starter. I wont say anything bad about Quinton yet mostly because he is still learning the position after moving over from the OL. I would love to forget us to get two more OL guys and a WR like JP (Especially since Stonum just got kicked off the team). Are there any guys flying under the radar that we can pick up?

  16. Just a quick question, but does anyone have enough MGoPoints to be able to post on Mgoblog?

  17. After reading some of Yuri Wrights tweets I completely understand why UM stopped recruiting him. If you would like to read them go to chatwolverines.com

    1. I just read the tweets and if they are accurate this guy is poison. His head is way to big and it seems to be mostly empty space. Unless the coaching staff could get him to grow up in a hurry it would be a waste of a scholarship. He'd be kicked off the team for some offense or another before he ever saw any playing time.

  18. In addition to what Jer89 had to say on Stonum:

We have now lost Stonum...........it's official.....so our need in this position just took a hit. Sometimes doing the right things hurts but it remains the right thing.

    For IMMEDIATE Release

Wide Receiver Darryl Stonum Dismissed from U-M Football Team

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head football coach Brady Hoke announced on Tuesday (Jan. 17) that wide receiver Darryl Stonum has been dismissed from the team for a violation of team rules.

"I love Darryl and wish him nothing but the absolute best," Hoke said. "However, there is a responsibility and a higher standard you must be accountable to as a University of Michigan football student-athlete. That does not and will not change. It's unfortunate because I believe he has grown a great deal as a person since the beginning of the season. My hope is that maturing process continues."

Stonum started 25 of 36 career games at U-M, catching 76 passes for 1,008 yards and six touchdowns. He also returned 62 kickoffs for 1,538 yards and holds the single-season kickoff return mark with 39 returns for 1,001 yards in 2009. Stonum redshirted in 2011.

"I appreciate everything the University of Michigan, Dave Brandon and Coach Hoke have done for me," said Stonum. "I look forward to continuing my football career down the road, but more importantly, right now I'm focused on graduating from Michigan this Spring. I understand only I am responsible for my actions. I'm sad about how all of this turned out, but I completely understand. I love this school and my team and will miss them all greatly. But I'll always be a Wolverine. I know I have grown and matured as a person over the last nine months, and I will continue to learn and grow every day. I want to thank everyone for all of their support, and I hope they will support me in the future."]
