The hunt begins...

Multiple sources are saying that Rich Rodriguez has been fired as Michigan's head football coach; and given that we know he was meeting with Brandon sometime today, it's probably true. This was expected after a poor bowl performance, but I don't agree with it unless they actually have a good replacement already lined up.

The buzz going around is that Harbaugh will bolt to the NFL or remain at Stanford, which means most UM fans are going to be very disappointed - especially after seeing how good he made Stanford last night.

*UPDATE*: Dave Brandon has come out saying that RR has not been fired, however there will be a meeting between him and Rodriguez tomorrow, as well as a players' meeting. Chances are he'll still get fired anyway, but it looks like the media jumped the gun on this one.

John Harbaugh (Ravens coach) has tweeted that his brother is unlikely to go to Michigan, and that's surely a reliable source, I mean why would his brother make stuff up? So it seems like Harbaugh really is out of Michigan's reach now, does that give RR just a little bit more hope of staying around?

  1. RichRod will probaley go to Pitt, Dave Wannstedt would be a good Defensive Cordinator for Michigan wouldn't he?

  2. deja vu. once again firing a coach without taking the proper steps to have a replacement. I blame Bill Martin for the last fiasco, and if DB fired this guy just assuming if he can't find anybody he will take Brady Hoke, I will be super pissed. I'd rather keep RR then go begging for coaches. If you remember, thats how we ended up with RR in the first place

  3. If Dave bring Jim to Ann Arbor, it is good. I will be shut up, but if he can't, Dave must be resopsible for upcoming woe of wolverines. Who's ging to be next? Brady Hoke? Never! It took five years for him to make Ball state good team even at MAC. Sandiego state ranked 4th even in MWC. If he land les, it is ok. However, Brady Hoke? Please, come down to Earth!

  4. Michigan messed up BIG TIME today! Dave Brandon couldn't take the pressure of being a leader and taking the heat for keeping RR one more year and see what next year's experience and actual talent on defense could bring. Stupid now we are gonna get stuck with a guy who struggled to win in the MAC and his teams don't even win in the MWC! Another four years of struggle because Harbaugh is not coming to Michigan. Dissapointed in the leadership of the program but neverless, Go Blue!

  5. The reporter who broke the RR firing just commented on ESPN the he believes the Brady Hoke will be the next coach of the Wolverines. Ugh. Really? Why would we fire RR without having secured a big name coach to take over one of the most storied programs in college football. It can't be that hard.

    ReplyDelete
  6. You can't say DB messed up, the coaching staff messed up. Dave Brandon is doing his job, the coaching, the system, the play on the field is what was messed up. Time for a change, RR is a good coach and he'll have no problems finding a job, he just didn't fit in the Big House.

  7. Brady Hoke? Prepare yourselves for three more years of mediocrity! The only redeeming value will be if he can land some premier assistant coaches...

  8. If the AD hires a poor choice for a coach, then he did mess up. Sure, RR and company did not do themselves any favors by losing so much, but hiring someone just to hire someone different, and who is a Michigan Man, ugh. There are plenty of Michigan fans who will eat their words gladly if Hoke could actually do well, but his record shows that is highly implausible.

I am digusted by Hoke being considered. I would rather they go to a FCS school and get a proven winner -- like OSU did with Tressel.

  9. Terry Foster just tweeted that UM has hired Brady Hoke...

  10. DB 100% messed up if he didn't have Harbaugh signed and your crazy if you say he didn't steve. RR didn't fit because he was never given a fair chance from day 1... he failed at the job the day he took it because "he was not a Michigan man", screw that bring in a guy who will win and RR would have!. No matter if he went 11-1 this year people would still talk. RR was no less then 9 or 10 wins next year if not more next year and we screwed that all up. RR will find a job no doubt, and just like he did a West Virginia will soon have that team in a BCS bowl and championships soon. Harbaugh 3rd year he won 7 games and in his 4th year his team went 12-1, why not give RR 4 years and see what happened next year esp when we know we are not geting Harbaugh and one more year under RR if a bust we could get Miles from LSU. Just plain stupid and now we are stuck with a no name coach who will be fired in 3-4 years as well. "Those who stay will be champions", we have to let them stay. Disapointing

  11. That's funny RR 9-10 wins next year with Michigan....no wonder you think DB messed up. Did you not watch the bowl game? MSU had 4th and inches, with a big set and Mich comes out with a three man front. I suppose giving up the first down was because they had too many freshman?? Too many failures to get paid another year, sorry!

Do really think firing Rich is reasonalble act without replacement? Do you really think Brady is better coach than Rich? Also, do you really think Brady is Michigan man? He is hoosier as you know. Firing coach for punishment is very studpid act. Dave did it. Acutally, I don't care who coahc Michiagn, if he brings more win at least 9 in a season. However, I can't agree with Dave that Brady is the right guy. Please, tell me the Foster's tweeter is a joke.

  14. I'm so happy!! I mean... what recruit wouldn't want to play for Brady Hoke??? I'm gonna go find a rope and a tree....

  15. Read the tweet from Terry Foster. It doesn't say he'll be the next Michigan coach, it says that Brady Hoke will coach at Michigan stadium next year, when SDSU plays Michigan there.

  16. I think we should all relax, hold hands and sing some inspirational songs....
Terry Foster's tweet said, it's official Brady Hoke will be coaching at Michigan Stadium next Sept 24th when SDSU visits...

  17. Steve: Since your the only ignorant one who is excited about Brandon Hoke being our next coach

    1. Mississippi State was a great team only lossing to Aubrun by 3 points, LSU 2 touchdowns( in LSU), Alabama by 20 (In Bama) and Arkansas by 6 in double O.T. you expected us to do good in 30 days?

    2. Harbaugh ran a 3-4 majority of the game last night and he is "God" who is not coming to Michigan. Not much differnet than a 3-3-5 which I personally dont like and feel would be changed next year.

    3. RR is going to get paid regardless so might as well pay him then Brady Hoke who is a joke of a coach.

    4. Michigan 2011 schedule knowing our defense and offense will get better:
    Western Michigan W 1-0
    Notre Dame W 2-0
    Eastern Michigan W 3-0
    San Diego State W 4-0
    Minnesota W 5-0
    Northwestern W 6-0
Michigan State (very young team) W 7-0
    Purdue W 8-0
Iowa (very young team and new qb) W 9-0
    Illinois W 9-0
    Nebraska ??????
    Ohio State ?????
    Big Ten Championship game ?????
    Bowl Game?????

    5. I was at the Bowl game and yes dissapointing but knew we had a bright future.

He would easily get 9 to 10 wins if not more. So I hope your thrilled about Brady Hoke

  18. Let the Brady Joke, I mean Hoke, era begin.

  19. Maizeandblue, calling me ignorant....funny It's Brady, not Brandon...DB and that's not Dave Brandon. I'm not the only one that thinks this way...

    ReplyDelete
  20. typed wrong, excuse me. Only reason, if there is one to fire RR is if he had a great coach like Chris Peterson, Jim Harbaugh, Gary Patterson signed, which isnt the case. Now I'd be happy with Pat Fitzgerald just please not HOKE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm sure that DB wouldn't have fired RichRod if he didn't already have a coach in place. I would also find it hard to believe that he would fire RichRod and give him 2.5mil without getting the coach that he wanted. Why pay someone 2.5mil and get your second choice. Hoke would be available next year after RR contract expired.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Can't believe this is happening. DB can kiss his job goodbye if he hires Brady joke. Alabama had it's rough years, Nebraska, guess it's our turn thanks to rich idiots running things. You can bet I wouldn't have been on vacation when we don't have a coach, BIll Martin. RR never got a fair shake. He would never fit but don't get rid of him for Brady hoke! Bad business

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree Jordan and I hope your right KKopp, but regardless Michigan football needs to change to the new style of football. We switched from triple option to pro style so why cant we switch to the spread? Auburn is spread and so is Oregon and they both are in the National Championship. Harbaugh who put a new system in at Stanford in his 3rd year went 7-6, his 4th year went 12-1 and its just sad cause I felt the program was ready to be elite again with help from an easier schedule next year. It is a shame we didnt have more patience and waited another year and if Rich Rod was a bust we wouldnt have to settle for Hoke and Miles would have been a lot cheaper if not another great coach.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't Michigan run a spread offense? Most college teams now run some version of the spread offense. The offense wanted particularly the problem. We do however need to return the smash mouth, pro style offense that has been the staple of Michigan for years.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Everything is such speculation. Terry Foster is now saying that RR hasn't officially been fired, and that Jim Harbaugh and Les Miles are still in the mix for the Michigan job. I just want a straight answer. I'm going crazy over here.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Just giving you a hard time maize, I think Dave Brandon is a pretty intelligent man, he has to have a plan A, plan B in order to fire RR, if indeed that is the case. Michigan is denying that now....the drama continues.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Brent Hart: We do under Rich Rod, but Hoke doesnt run a spread so we would be going back to the Carr days. And I know WHO IS OUR COACH?

Steve: It's all good. just frustrated and I know you are too haha. But I hope we figure this out.
Worse comes to worse we keep RR one more year and then get Les Miles next year if to expensive this year

    ReplyDelete
  28. Unfortunately I don't think our defense is going to be better next year no matter who the coach is. We just simply don't have the talent on that side of the ball to compete for a big ten championship. The lack of defense is in my mind the main reason we got blown out in the Gator bowl. Playing from behind changes our offensive game plan.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The spread offense doesn't seem too good chasing the game. I tell you if Michigan had stopped them on that 3rd and 10 on MSU's opening drive, could be a different ball game. If Michigan gets a two score lead, they are able to do a lot more offensively. Plus it would have given the defense some confidence!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Could have, should have, will happen, give him a 4th year... NO, The hell with Rich Rodriguez, 1-1-2011 is all I have to say, that was horrible,..what the heck DB is waiting to fire this tool of a coach, who knows. All I have to say is what most want, FIRE RODRIGUEZ, WE DON'T WANT TO HEAR IT... The glove did not and will not fit o/k....

    ReplyDelete
  31. MaizeandBlue did you watch any games this year? I have coached football for many years and have never seen a defense as bas as this one. NO adjustments, 3 man front in short yardage, no blitzing, no aggressive play and you think they will win 9 or 10 games. They will be lucky to win 7 next year unless by some miracle their defense changes places with... well anybody. They will have a hard time beating ND, SDSU, MSU, NWU, ILL, Neb, or OSU. That is possibly 6 loses. UM has no talent on defense to run the 3-3-5 and that is what they will run with RR. As a coach the 3-4 or the 4-3 which is Stanford's base D is nothing like the 3-3-5. Especially when the UM coaches don't even know how to scheme the 3-3-5!

Please remember against good defenses UM can not score. RR runs the same plays and mskes it easy for DC to adjust and stop. Example; MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin, OSU, & MSU.

What does everyone have against Hoke? I don't know that much about him but he has had success at Ball ST and SDSU. I know he used to coach D-line at UM maybe he would bring toughness back to the team? Right now UM is weak on the field. I watched SDSU and they run a spread but not the read option (which is not that hard to put in).

I am not saying that Hoke is the right guy but I know that RR is not and I was a RR supporter. It just didn't work out. I think RR will succeed somewhere but not at UM. His coaching philosophy just didn't work.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Dang JP, I could not agree anymore.... bottomline the 3 year trial & error did not work... need to move on....the reality is recruiting is going to suffer no matter what at least this year once again Hart is already gone, Dallas Crawford decomitted earlier has a Miami, FL visit date set, we will lose him, Countess is all in it appears and then next up is Frost & Lyons this Saturday, if JH stays at Stanford I see him going there or Nebraska....

    ReplyDelete
  33. If in fact it is true that we hired Hoke I think that we should keep RR's Offensive coaches and keep the same offense and let Hoke build us a defense.. what do you guys think??

    ReplyDelete
  34. ANything to get the offense improved, but we need to get back to basics, physical big boys upfront, power running backs, touted TE's & the WR's, I mean Braylon, Manningham, Terrell, etc etc.

OPEN the wallet & go get a top notch DC. If it's a pro defensive minded person, so be it.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Its crazy how things play out. A couple years ago we were all mad at JH for talking bad about our program. Now that he is a top notch candidate we are all kissing his ass hard!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Jp: I have season tickets so yea I've seen a game or two and yes our two starting corner backs were out the entire season and yes I dont agree with everything that was called on defense but I do know with better athletes and more experience they will be better and I expected you being a "coach" would understand that. We already beat ND and ILL with an awful defense already and SD St. insnt that much better. MSU will havea whole new team last year lossing 20 some seniors. A new defense yes, I prefer a 4-3 defense. What I grew up watching but if we stay 3-3-5 we can afford to blitz more with a more experienced secondary. Rich Rod put up 28 points against Wisconsin and didnt have the ball at all in the 2nd half. A better defense would give them the ball more and we dont need a top 10 defense next year. All we need is a top 50 and in time we will get our top 10 defene back. And have a top 10 offense. JH would need 4 years to turn the program around, give RR 4 years and see what can happen and yes I believe that given our schedule we would go into the Nebraska game and OSU game with a great record and a top ten ranking. Call me crazy but I see potential if we get Crawford, Frost, Cooper and so forth. G-Rob def. needs the boot though no arguement there.

    ReplyDelete
  37. and btw JP... all those games against PSU, Wisconsin and IOWA we scored 28 points or more. Imagine next year when our defense is getting better with experience and defensive recruits we get a few more stops and gets the ball more what could happen.

    ReplyDelete
  38. MaizeandBlue I hope you are correct, but RR would need to have nothing to do with the defense. It is his 3-3-5 and he does not run it properly. It is an aggressive scheme that needs a HUGH nose in the middle to gain DBL teams and lost of blitz packages. Right now UM doesn't have the personnel to run it correctly. I know injuries happen but you have to overcome.

I am not RR has control of the team now, they are just not competitive and look like they have given up (loss of consintration, dropped balls, missed tackles, missed assignments). But I knkow the players like him!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Another thing to remember is: what if we had a decent kicker this year too?? maybe one more win.. well we have one now. Add that to more experience on both sides of the ball and I see good things happening. One another point, I dont think it would take THAT long to be good if we switch back to a pro-style O. Gardner at qb, Shaw and Hopkins at hb, and we have decent wr's.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Amazing to the number of posts defending Rodriguez, this clown has thrashed our FB program, 52-14 is all I have to say,....

    ReplyDelete
  41. Gibbons is a scolarship kicker as well and was rated higher coming out of HS than the one we have committed now.
Again I thought RR would do a good job but it just didn't work and it is time to move on...UM needs to be competitive against the Big Ten teams again and the rivalries MSU & OSU need to be put back in their place.

    ReplyDelete
  42. 1st of all Mike go root for the buckeyes or Spartans because you say nothing but negative crap... I bet when we have been 5-0 last 2 years you were RR #1 fan. And lossing to a D-1AA school was prior to RR incase you forgot.

JP That would be perfect situation I think. Regardless from what I have read RR is done in Michigan and this is a way to smooth out the transition unlike MAryland. I think when the dust settles we have Hoke

Matthew: thats a freshman qb, shaw cant stay healthy to save his life and our o-line are nothing like Wisconsin to run that offense. But either eay I just want to win regardless!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I just saw on another post that says ESPN reports that DB wants RR to resign because of the NCAA violations and would not have to pay him off. That could be why it has taken 2 day to decide. RR may be thinking of his options overnight and making a decision tomorrow. Not sure just a theory from another post.

I also heard that Les Miles has an out clause in his contract for UM offer? Another theory is DB is waiting for after LSU game?

    ReplyDelete
  44. JP thats interesting. Do you like Les? I mean it just seems like luck and a lot of talent has carried him.

    ReplyDelete
  45. MaizeNBlew.., do me a favor and shut your hole. It's pretty amazing on the stats on the defensive side given up from 2009 to 2010...128 more total points. No I am realistic that once the real big 10 schedule Mich. would struggle, that 2 years in a row. 3 years of the worst possible mediocrity, having to put up with Spartan Fans and 7 years of losing to Ohio State is enough, the truth hurts so be it... otherwise keeps your comments to yourself, you don't have to agree with me, but if you got dish it take it then....

    ReplyDelete
  46. Listen you 14 year old little boy... Loyd Carr has been there for 4 of those years lossing to OSU, not RR. And Michigan will never have to have a punk like you defend them. It's history and tradition will always regardless of 3 or 4 years. And so you know if we switch it will be two or three years before we beat those teams if we switch. And like I said before if you cant stand loyal Michigan Fans supporting their teams regardless of who is coach or what are record is then please go join another school's blog cause no body wants you here. I'll support whoever is coach and always will!

    ReplyDelete
  47. I was quite skeptical about Hoke, until I began doing some research about him. His years at Ball St. are not exactly what they seem. Two of his years of losing records were because he played Freshman and Sophomores that were more talented than the upperclassman, but who made more mistakes (leading to mediocre records). Which is why he was able to pull off the 12-1 year at the end of his Ball St. career because they had an incredible amount of experience leading into their upperclassman years.

He is the type of coach that is known for his tough defenses(he still coaches the defensive line as the head coach) meticulous preparation, and able to coach according to the talent that is on his team, rather than the scheme. For instance, until he was able to get the talent for a 4 man front line on defense (which he ran against Navy) he ran the 3-3-5 because there was more talent at that time in SDS's secondary. This year, SDS ran a pro/spread option combo that was quite effective because it was balanced between the pass and run.

The thing I do like about him is his commitment to defense, which has been sorely lacking for the past three years.

To be honest, I really don't care anymore who is the head coach as long as next year and beyond there is significant progress on the defensive side of the ball and minimal damage to the offensive side(if or when RR is fired) because the coach is good enough to flex his offense in order to keep a special talent like D-Rob.
