Miles staying put

Scout.com and probably many other sites by now are reporting that Les Miles will remain as the head coach of LSU, after an announcement was made by their AD, Joe Alleva.

Welcome Brady Hoke??

Let the panic commence!!!

  1. Is it too early to start with the "Fire Dave Brandon" chants? I mean this has been an embarrassing disaster. I keep hoping for something good, but the more time that passes the worse things look. And if Brady Hoke, why didn't we do this say...idk...a month ago?

  2. It's another swing and a miss for Dave Brandon

  3. Hi,
Just wanted to thank you for your terrific blog. This has been an exercise of enormous frustration, but I do appreciate your timely posts on recruiting and the coaching search. Thanks!

  4. I personally believe that they didn't offer Les Miles. He would have taken the job if they did. Might have something to do with the new coach utilizing the players we have. DB might have asked Les about this and didn't like the answer. Les is also about to turn 60. Maybe he doesn't plan on coaching much longer. The real question is what next? I don't believe that Hoke is the answer. Unless however he is able to hire on some very talented coordinators. Coordinators with name recognition. It's apparent that most recruits are no longer choosing a program for the school but for the coaching staff. Either way if a coach isn't named this week the 2011 recruiting class is F@#*ed.

  5. Well this totally stinks, but we have to give Hoke a chance I guess. Atleast he will have the passion and put everything thing into it. But lets hold out hope that Gary Patterson saves us.

  6. Fire Dave Brandon and Mary Sue Coleman who is responsible for hiring him if we are down to Hoke.

  7. It appears that DB is now on a flight headed for the west coast (Santa Ana). If Hoke is know the target. I wonder how he feels to be the 5th or 6th choice.

  8. Yeah MGoBlog is saying Brandon is headed out to Cali. Santa Ana is apparently an hour or so away from San Deigo, so surely he's going to see Brady Hoke.

  9. I don't know if Les was even offered the coaching job. After the interview DB may have said that he was going in a different direction. It has been known to happen in an interview even with the best canidates! To those who say DB should have had someone in line before he fired RR, I don't believe that was possible unless it was Hoke. All the other coaches were still playing or just played in their bowl game. DB probably wanted to allow those coaches to focus on their game rather than disrupt their attention?? If anyone has heard Les speak in a news conference they should know that he can screw anything up by what comes out of his mouth and that very well could have happened.

Now UM needs to move forward to fill the position. I don't believe UM will end up with a ex-NFL coach but you never know. I think Hoke would do a great job because he would be afraid to fail considering it is his dream job. But there is also many others that would also do a great job. I do believe UM needs to hire this week to keep the recruites they have for 2011.

  10. I am guessing that Hoke does not care what number he was, just that he is even considered. The fact is, he's getting the job because he wants it badly, not because he is the best coach possible.

This is painful, really painful, as a fan, but I still have faith in the school. I hate to be negative, so I'll believe we can still win with Hoke as the coach. I believe in the program more than the coach. The last Michigan coach I had faith in was Gary Moeller. Carr was not bad, and I loved him, but he was out-coached too many times.

  11. This is so embarrassing it's beyond words. Our own alums are shunning us.

Ya know, even a moron does not get rid of his only car without another mode of transportation lined up (ala DB dumping RR)!

Is this what we can expect from this business genius? Is it almost time to STOP SAYING he is as some continue to do? We'll know shortly when someone, anyone, please, takes this job.

  12. Tony Dungy was not absolute in saying he was not interested but of course he is not known to be in Santa Ana and next best pro prospect, Greg Mattison is still busy with the Ravens.
If it's Hoke kiss off 2001 and 2012( The Little Cesar's Bowl would be poetic) then we'll see if he can recruit and win.

  13. Hoke might turn out to be a great head coach, but can he realistically start winning games in 2011? I don't think so. Michigan's slump will continue for at least another year.

  14. This is turning into our very own version of Groundhog Day. I can't wait to see who rejects us tomorrow.....

Wait!! Didn't I see some story awhile back about Tyrone Wheatly coaching somewhere?

    TYRONE! TYRONE!

  15. News Flash: The plane to So Cal has left the barn. Hopefully, we may know in about 8 hours if we have a new coach.

  16. kkopp - with all do respect, your crazy. If DB flew to Baton Rouge and didn't like what Les had to say about the program, then our program is screwed anyway. The PROGRAM and its alum and leaders need to change! Nobody wants to come to my favorite school because we fire a coach after 3 years. Michigan has become a laughing stock on and now OFF the field because of the way we run the program. If I hear one more alum talk about how we need a "Mich Man" im going to lose it. EVERYONE across the nation is mocking us. Our program is still run in the 70's, and we tried to change with RR, but the powers in charge can't change so RR never got a fair shot.

Everything from the ground up needs to change at the MICH ATHLETIC DEPT. Football brings in all the money so if you can't run it, get out.

I support michigan with whoever they bring in as coach, if its brady hoke, I will support him. But the fools who ran RR out of town bc they thought they could get JH or Les won't support Hoke even if he is a "Mich man" bc he won't do well from the start and he wasn't our first or 3rd choice.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Actually, the fools who ran RR out of town are the ones that most support the hiring of Brady Hoke, because he "gets it" as far as being a Meechigan Man.

I'm quite disappointed two things more than Hoke's hiring: 1. The political way Brandon is going about hiring Hoke is pathetic. He's trying to make it look like he did a genuine search for the coach, when it has been Hoke from the get go. 2. The firing of Rich Rodriguez for Brady Hoke, when RR should have been given one more year. I was losing faith, especially in the last three games where the team and coaches seemed to give up/look like shell-shocked Bambis. However, I felt that Greg Robinson should have been fired, and RR should have been openly admonished for not caring about the defense and been told to take credit for the bad play.

Hoke was apparently a fantastic recruiter under Carr, and has been able to get some solid recruiting done at SDSU, so we shall see. His RB was just named to the All-Freshman team over James White at Wisconsin! Perhaps with the prestige of the University he will be able to get recruits to stay this year, and get a few solid contributors for next season?

  18. I am glad all of the posters have inside knowledge and can see into the future! NO ONE can say how good Hoke will or won't be. There is one thing everyone can say is that RR did not work out and he is gone! If you think this recruiting calss can be saved by a great coach, what class are you looking at? Hart was already gone and that is what everyone was holding on to. The quality of players is down in this class. There has been many coaches that came in late and made it work (Tressell and he wasn't even OSU's !st, 2nd, or 3rd choice and he has done well). Give the process a chance as well as the new coach. Then next year you can start bitching again!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Also, its hard for me to think that if Les Miles didn't see eye to eye with Dave Brandon on how to utilize the players we have, it wouldn't have matter because DB made it very clear the players didn't matter in his decision for the coach. If it did we wouldn't be sacrificing our current commits this way. Bottom line is Les saw the light and realized he was going to get the same deal RR got but with WORSE talent, and he would be out in 3 years as well. Smart man. Dave Brandon should have given him a 5 year unconditional deal, but that won't happen. Bottom line, DB didn't make the sale!

Now we are on to Brady Hoke, who will get the SAME 3 year deal RR got, and will fail and will be gone. Brady would need 6 years to win Big Ten championship, Les would need 4, and Jim could maybe do it in 3 (but beat OSU).

My opinion of course- please what are yours?

  20. I agree with JP in NC on giving it a chance. But that will not stop me from criticizing the amateurish way DB has handled this.

So, in my opinion any coach coming in now should ask, no, REQUIRE, two things.

    1. A very large brinks truck with lots of dollys.
    2. A very large buyout clause when they get fired in 3 years.

If the new coach does not have more than 7 wins after year 3, they should be fired just like RR was and we start over. DB has set the bar at 3 years, so let's make that the new standard of performance at UM! There, I'm adapting to the new DB theory and practice of how to run an athletic program!

  21. Jordan - During DB's press conference after the firing of RR he was asked about bringing in a coach that would run a difference type of offense then RR. Thus Michigan having to again recruit players to fit that scheme. DB said that he will bring in a coach that can use the recruits that are currently on the roster. Les runs a pro style offense. Thats what I mean about not liking what he heard from Les. I don't recall mentioning anything about bringing in Michigan Man either. I was just stating the fact that recruits buy into the coach as much as the school. If that wasn't the case then why has Michigan targeted the big name coaches during there last two coach openings. I personally thought that we should have given RR one more year. Next years starting defense will still be young. It doesn't matter who is coaching.

  22. iam with you ND did it, Nebraska did it, Miami did it, fired their coaches after 3 years or so and bad seasons. Besides ND the others hired lesser known coaches and it worked out (yet to see with Miami). Look I watched the NC game and Oregon was handled up front, not even close. If that is what fans wanted with RR than so be it, I would rather have bigger faster athletes.
To say Les could win in 4 Jim in 3 and Hoke in 6 is just crazy speculation. What will you say if Hoke wins 8 games next year then 10 or 11 next. "It was a great hire" after you bad mouthed every step! Let the process go forward then start bitching!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I am not saying Hoke is the "MAN" for the job but I will not criticize any hire until he has performed on the job! That should be the standard for UM fans! I did not criticize RR until year 3 then the hammer came down from me. I hoped and supported RR until the end of the regular season and the OSU game.

  24. All well and good JP, but DB has set the bar at 3 years. Get more than 7 wins and beat tOSU or you're out. That's the DB way from here on in. NO EXCUSES ANYMORE.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Better yet, get more than 7 wins and beat tOSU or DB IS OUT. That'd be a better platform to operate under.

  26. We just need to start planning next years recruiting class...This 1 seems to be a lost cause.... Hopefully Hoke can coach the defense a million times better than Robinson

  27. K-Kop,
Les Miles runs both the Pro-Style and read option Spread. Against A&M, he mixed it up perfectly and tore apart A&M's defense. It is Hoke's offense that I worry about, since he mentioned one time that the read-option spread is like playing basketball on grass. Hoke also uses both the pro-style, but sometimes goes into a passing spread (not D-Rob's type). If Hoke is so desperate to have the Michigan job, he might want to publicly assure everyone that the read-option spread will be part of the offense's arsenal (which may keep D-Rob from transferring).

The one positive attribute about Hoke is his commitment to defense. His 4-man front did a great job against Navy's Wing-T. They were pretty nasty, which I definitely missed during the past 3 years. Also, there is more than meets the eye with his tenure at Ball State. He had to deal with some crazy adversity and lack of support from the school president, the athletic director, a bunch of boosters and alumni and he still did great (his final two years, at least).

I was on the Les Miles bandwagon, but if a defensive minded coach such as Hoke is flexible in his offense, then I will support Hoke as the new Wolverine coach

  28. It's over; official Mtwitter says Hoke hired.

  29. May god help us all....joking. At least we have a head coach now.
In a way I'm glad that the guy who wanted it the most, got the job.

  30. How has ANYTHING changed? We wanted more offense so we fired Lloyd and his predictable schemes (WR screen, hb iso, deep route = 3 and out) so we get RR. He was doomed from the start and his defense sucked. So now the fans Scream for a defensive coach! I heard ridiculous idiots say hire Ron English for head coach... Well we got the 3rd option in RR and now we got the 3rd hire in Hoke. Things will never change for the better until the program/process changes. I will support hoke, but i will not support any Michigan fan who wants his resignation after 4 bad years. I don't blame any good coaches for not wanting to coach here, right now it's pathetic. Not sure who started this bad business and football trend and don't care, I just know NO ONE is changing or fixing it. Same old same old. Go blue
